Gilliam, a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on July 17, 2026, following a courageous journey of recovery from a heart transplant. She was 75 years old. Born on February 3, 1951, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Shelia lived a life dedicated to caring for others and spreading kindness wherever she went. Shelia was the cherished daughter of the late John and Michelle Gilliam. She is predeceased by her beloved sister, Carla Gilliam, and her two precious nieces whom she lovingly raised as her own, Dyeasha and Shaquana Gilliam. Shelia graduated from Lincoln High School in 1974 and went on to dedicate 15 years of her professional life as a compassionate and skilled nurse at Jersey City Medical Center. In her role, she was especially known for encouraging young people to reach for the stars, always finding the time to mentor and inspire. A devoted member of Ocean Avenue Baptist Church for over a decade, Shelia's faith was a cornerstone of her life. Her church community remembers her as an active participant, always ready with a warm smile and a helping hand. Shelia was a gifted seamstress, particularly known for her exquisite prom dresses. Every spring, her home became a flurry of fabric and creativity as she brought joy to countless young women, ensuring they felt beautiful on their special night. Those who knew Shelia will remember her for her unwavering generosity and her readiness to give the shirt off her back to someone in need. Her warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone she met. Shelia leaves behind her surviving sister, Carla Gilliam, and her two dear nieces, Dyeasha and Shaquana Gilliam, who will carry forward her legacy of love and compassion. A service to honor and celebrate Shelia’s life will be held on July 29, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Ocean Avenue Baptist Church, located at 735 Ocean Avenue, Jersey City, New Jersey 07305. Family, friends, and those whose lives she touched are invited to join in remembering her remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of one's choice in Shelia’s memory, as a tribute to her spirit of giving and her commitment to helping others. Shelia M. Gilliam’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. May she rest in eternal peace.
