In loving memory of Sheila Washington, who graced this world with her vibrant spirit and compassionate heart from August 4, 1963, until her untimely departure on September 16, 2026. Born in Gary, Indiana, Sheila was a beacon of light and warmth, beloved by all who had the privilege to know her. Sheila's life was grounded in love and family, instilled in her by her devoted mother, Callie Fletcher, and her father by heart, Earnest Bates, who cherished her as his own. Though she has departed from this world, she reunites with her great-grandparents, Mae Maclaurin, her grandfather, Booker T. Washington, her brother, Byron Washington, and other cherished family members who await her with open arms. Sheila leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience, embodied in her six children: Bobby McLaurin, Crystal Washington, Corella Washington, Willie Washington, Jerrell Washington, and Clifford Fletcher. Her brothers, Freddie McLaurin, Bernard Washington, and Ronnie Washington, remain to carry forward her memory, alongside the sisters she found in Marian Campbell, Latonya Anderson, and others she held dear. Her family extends to 17 adoring grandchildren, whom she cherished deeply. Along with a handful of children who weren't biologically hers but she loved with all hearts, nephews, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and a bunch of others. In a partnership of over 20 years, Sheila shared laughter, love, and countless memories with Reggie Brazile, her steadfast companion. Their bond was one of strength and devotion, and we hold Reggie in our thoughts as he recovers from the accident that took Sheila from us too soon. A proud alumna of Gary Roosevelt High School Historical Society, Sheila dedicated 15 years of her life as a nurse, where her kindness and compassion were felt by all. Her unwavering commitment to helping others was a testament to her generous spirit. Sheila was an active member of Rose Hill Baptist Church, where her faith and love for her community shone brightly. Her home was her sanctuary, filled with laughter, music, and the joyful chaos of her grandchildren. Whether coloring, dancing, or watching movies, Sheila relished every moment spent with her family. Known for her radiant smile and uplifting energy, Sheila had an uncanny ability to brighten any room. Her generous nature and fierce love for her family were unparalleled, often reminding those around her that she was "the army behind her children and grandchildren." In a private ceremony, Sheila's family will gather to celebrate her beautiful life, grateful for the support of Peace of Mind Funeral and Cremations services and all who have offered their love and condolences during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Sheila's memory to a cause close to her heart, continuing her legacy of kindness and care.
