Shatoya passed away peacefully at her home in Charlotte, North Carolina, after a lifelong battle with lupus, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on June 28, 1992, in Charlotte, Shatoya was a beacon of light and strength to all who knew her. She was the beloved daughter of Ivy Simmons and Clifford McMurry, who provided her with an upbringing rich in love, support, and resilience. Shatoya was a proud graduate of Independence High School, where she forged friendships that lasted a lifetime and displayed an early passion for helping others understand the challenges of living with lupus. Shatoya was a devoted mother to her daughter, Journee, who was the center of her universe and her greatest source of joy and inspiration. Her family, including her sisters Alexis, Whitney, and Toya, and her brother Darius, were her foundation and closest confidants. Shatoya’s family also extends to a wide circle of cousins, nieces, and nephews, each of whom she cherished deeply. A passionate advocate, Shatoya devoted much of her time to raising awareness about lupus, providing support and hope to countless others facing similar challenges. She was a member of various support groups and organizations dedicated to this cause, where her courage and determination inspired many to fight their battles with grace and perseverance. Shatoya had an extraordinary ability to bring people together. Her home was often filled with laughter and warmth as she shared her love with family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Whether it was a simple gathering or a festive celebration, Shatoya’s spirit was the heart of every event, always ensuring that everyone felt included and loved. Though her time with us was far too brief, Shatoya’s legacy of kindness, strength, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Mary and Wallace Simmons, Rose and Robert McMurry, and her cousin, Derek Simmons, who undoubtedly welcomed her with open arms. In memory of Shatoya, her family invites you to join them in a celebration of her life, which will be held on April 10, 2026, at the Harmony Church, located in her hometown of Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to lupus awareness organizations, continuing Shatoya’s mission to support and uplift those affected by this condition. As we say goodbye, we hold onto the love Shatoya shared with us, a love that will forever illuminate our lives. May her soul find rest and peace, knowing she was deeply loved and will never be forgotten.
