With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Shamell Hillson, cherished wife, devoted mother, and beloved daughter, who left this world on August 21, 2026. Born on November 28, 1980, in Chicago, Illinois, Shamell was a beacon of warmth and joy throughout her life, touching the hearts of all who knew her.
Shamell was a vibrant soul, known for her quick wit and infectious smile. Her light-hearted humor could brighten any room, and she had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcomed and valued. Her kindness and generosity were evident in every interaction, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives.
A proud graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1998, Shamell went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration from UCLA in 2005. Her career flourished as the Administrator of Belmont Village Senior Living, where she devoted ten years to mentoring and motivating her staff. Her leadership was marked by compassion and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of both residents and employees.
On July 4, 2015, Shamell married the love of her life, Derrick Hughes, in a beautiful ceremony in Los Angeles. Together for 15 wonderful years, they built a life filled with love and laughter, raising two treasured children, Derrick Hughes Jr. and Savannah Hughes. Her family was her heart, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
Shamell is survived by her loving husband, Derrick Hughes, her dear children, Derrick Jr. and Savannah, her devoted parents, Hermell King and Willie Hillson, and her adoring siblings: Ayanna Lee, Kejvana Lee, Taneshia Black, Jarvis Hillson, Lekecia Franklin, Sonija Hillson, Latoya Hillson, Kevin King, and Jalysa King. She was predeceased by her beloved grandparents, Barbara and Willie Hillson, and her aunt, Shelia Hardwick.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for their compassionate care during Shamell’s final days. In keeping with Shamell’s caring and generous spirit, the family requests that any memorial contributions be made in her honor to the Alzheimer's Research Association in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to celebrate Shamell’s life. Though she is no longer with us, Shamell’s memory will remain forever in our hearts, a testament to the love and joy she brought to the world.
