With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Sergio Avalos, a cherished father, grandfather, and esteemed physician, on July 25, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on November 23, 1929, in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, Sergio's life was a testament to dedication, compassion, and excellence. Sergio was the beloved son of the late Alberto Avalos Puente and Elia Antonia Avalos (nee Aguilar). He was predeceased by his parents, his older brother Jorge, and younger sister Hilda. Sergio's remarkable journey began in Monterrey, where he met and married the love of his life, Esperanza Frias, on July 28, 1957. Together, they built a life filled with love and shared dreams. Sergio's pursuit of knowledge led him to the Universidad Autonoma De Nuevo Leon Facultad De Medicina, where he laid the foundations for a career in medicine that would span over six decades. His internship at the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, and residency at the Memorial Hermann Hospital System in Houston, Texas, marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to family medicine. His work in General Trevino, Nuevo Leon, instilled in him a deep humanitarian spirit, shaping the way he practiced medicine for those most in need. A dedicated physician, Dr. Avalos was Board Certified and a Life Member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He touched countless lives through his private practice, hospital emergency room work, and contributions to free clinics. His legacy includes delivering over 5,000 babies, many of whom proudly carry his name. Dr. Avalos's contributions to medicine were recognized when he was named "Doctor of the Day" by the Texas House of Representatives 73rd Legislature on January 28, 1993. His professional accomplishments were matched by his zest for life. An avid racquetball player, golfer, and certified pilot, Sergio embraced every challenge with enthusiasm. His athletic talent was evident from a young age, excelling in baseball, football, soccer, boxing, and hiking. In flying, he found freedom, often reminiscing fondly about his favorite aircraft, a Cessna 150, notably N-5831E, his solo aircraft. Beyond his professional and athletic achievements, Sergio was known for his integrity, hard work, and intellectual curiosity. His love for reading and engaging discourse enriched his life and those around him, fostering deep connections with family, friends, and colleagues. Sergio leaves behind a loving family, including his children: Sergio Antonio Avalos Jr. (Martha), Mario Alberto Avalos (Jill), Hilda Metztli Avalos, Jorge Alfredo Avalos (Linda), and Marla Carolina Rodriguez (Andrew). He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren—Charles, Andres, Christopher, Jessup, Jesiah, Jorge, Matthew, Natalie, and Madalyn—and a cherished great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Virginia Avalos and Jose Maria Avalos. In honoring Dr. Sergio Avalos's memory, the family suggests donations be made to a charity of your choice, reflecting his commitment to helping others. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, service, and adventure.
