August 21, 1944 — December 21, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Saundra Maples Disney, who left this world on December 21, 2025, at the age of 81. Her journey began on August 21, 1944, in the warm embrace of New Hope, Alabama, where she was born to JD and Edna Maples. Saundra's life was a tapestry woven with love, commitment, and dedication. She shared her childhood with her cherished siblings, Barbara and Jerry Glenn, and Jim and Linda Maples, forming bonds that would last a lifetime. Her family expanded with the arrival of her children, Johnny M. Birchfield II and Shonda Jerkins, whom she adored and guided with unwavering love. Saundra found her soulmate in Samuel D. Disney, with whom she shared ten wonderful years of marriage, beginning on March 5, 1995, in Tanner, Alabama. Together, they crafted a life rich with laughter and cherished memories, until Samuel's passing in 2004. Their love and partnership remain a testament to the beauty of shared dreams. As a professional, Saundra dedicated nearly two decades of her life to Maynor Eye Center, where she served as a Surgical Manager. Her career was marked by her commitment to excellence and her compassionate care for patients, leaving an indelible mark on colleagues and friends. After retiring in 1995, she continued to shine her light on those around her, dedicating herself to her community churches from Cape Coral, Florida, to Huntsville, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia. Saundra's legacy lives on through her family, who were the true joys of her life. Her grandchildren, Cole and Kaitlyn Birchfield, Ali and Dalan Atchley, Meral and Russell Thomas, and Jack B. Jerkins, along with her great-grandchildren, Mack and Teddy Kate Birchfield, and Millie Atchley, were the apples of her eye. She delighted in their laughter, accomplishments, and the love they shared. Aunt Saundra was also affectionately loved by her nieces and nephews, Dena Clemmons, Rusty and Ginny Glenn, and Lauren and Nikki Maples. Her warmth, kindness, and wisdom touched each of their lives in unique and special ways. As we bid farewell to Saundra, her family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Coventry Place in Decatur, Georgia, and Bridgeway Hospice in Atlanta, Georgia, for the compassionate care and support they provided over the years. Your kindness and dedication were a great comfort to Saundra and her family. In remembering Saundra, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, laughter, and the enduring bonds of family. Her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, reminding us of the beauty in every moment and the strength found in love. Rest in peace, dear Saundra. You are forever in our hearts.
