It is with deep sadness and heartfelt respect that we announce the passing of Sarah Martha Whitaker, a beloved teacher, cherished friend, and devoted family member. Sarah peacefully departed this world at her home on May 20, 2026, at the age of 98. Born on July 27, 1927, in the serene town of Cumberland City, Tennessee, Sarah was the cherished daughter of Francis Conger and Nola Ruth Gass Conger. Her life was a testament to love and dedication, qualities she held dear since her childhood days. In 1947, Sarah's heart found its true companion in Frank C. Whitaker. Their love story began at a bus stop and blossomed into a beautiful marriage filled with shared dreams and cherished memories until Frank's passing. Together, they created a life rich with love and laughter, and their union stood as a testament to enduring love. Sarah dedicated her professional life to nurturing young minds as an elementary school teacher within the Cleveland City School System. Her passion for education was evident in the countless hours she spent ensuring that every child received the best possible start in life. She considered each student her own, and her legacy of kindness, patience, and encouragement will continue to inspire future generations. Sarah was an active member of the Prospect Church of God, where she found a community that enriched her spiritual journey. Her faith was a guiding light in her life, offering her strength and comfort through the years. A woman of great generosity and kindness, Sarah possessed a smile that could light up any room. Her warmth and genuine spirit made her a treasured friend to all who knew her. Sarah's love for travel and meeting new people provided her with countless stories, which she loved to share with those around her, always with a twinkle in her eye and a gentle laugh. Sarah is survived by a devoted group of loving caregivers, who became like family in her later years: Theresa Bowers, Bertie Hicks, Ann Mullins, Judy Hysinger, Phyllis Ownby, Mary Watson, Angela, and Kathy Keller. Their compassion and dedication brought great comfort to Sarah and her family. She was also predeceased by her beloved pet, Talley, whose companionship brought her immense joy. A celebration of Sarah's remarkable life will be held on May 30, 2026, at 1:25 PM at the Companion Funeral Home. Family, friends, colleagues, and former students are invited to come together to honor Sarah's legacy and share the many wonderful memories she leaves behind.
