It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Sandra Louise Douglas-Whitaker, who departed this world peacefully in her home on May 17, 2026. Sandra was born on February 24, 1947, in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois. She graced this world with her warmth, kindness, and unyielding spirit for 79 beautiful years.
Sandra was the cherished daughter of Carrie and an unknown father, who instilled in her the values of strength and compassion. She is predeceased by her loving mother, her sisters Virda, Shirley, and an unnamed sister, as well as her brothers Micheal, Carl, and an unnamed brother. Her beloved husband, James Whitaker, also preceded her in death, leaving behind a legacy of love and partnership that was a beacon of light in her life.
Sandra's love and devotion to her family were unwavering. She is survived by her children, Sarah Douglas-Thomas and her husband Willie Thomas, and Cassandra Douglas, who were the pride and joy of her life. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Kamren Jones, Kia Louis, and Anora Tobin, as well as her great-grandchildren Anthony Tobin, Kalayah Jones, D'aSante Jones, Aerianna Gibson, Kamiya Louis, and Kalini Louis, who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
Sandra shared her life with James Whitaker in a marriage that was an epitome of love and laughter. Their union, though marked by the unknowns of time, was a testament to enduring partnership and joy. Together, they built a life filled with shared dreams and cherished moments.
For over three decades, Sandra dedicated herself as a Laundry Aide, a role she approached with diligence and pride. Though she retired, her love for the job drew her back to it, a testament to her unwavering commitment and vibrant energy. Her colleagues and those she served were touched by her kindness and sincerity.
Though she grew up in the nurturing embrace of the church, Sandra's faith transcended the walls of any building. She carried a profound belief in a higher power throughout her life, a testament to her enduring spiritual grace.
Sandra possessed an innate love for music and dancing, which she shared joyously with her family. Her quick wit and radiant smile were the hallmarks of her personality, along with her candid nature, kindness, and generosity. Those who knew her were often struck by her ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued, a gift she bestowed freely upon all who crossed her path. She also enjoyed an occasional visit to the casino, where she found delight and excitement.
As we celebrate Sandra's life, we remember not only the void her passing leaves but the profound impact she had on those who were blessed to know her. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and an unyielding spirit that touched everyone she met.
A memorial service celebrating Sandra's life will be held in Chicago, where her journey began. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of choice in Sandra's honor, continuing her legacy of kindness and generosity.
Rest in peace, dear Sandra. Your spirit lives on in the hearts of those you touched. You will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
