Samuel Leroy Young

September 20, 1941 — August 8, 2026

Samuel Leroy Young, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the Carolina Caring Hospice House in Sherrills Ford at the age of 84. Born on September 20, 1941, in Belmont, NC, Samuel was the cherished son of Charles and Edna Sheppard Young, who predeceased him. Samuel's life was marked by his dedication to family, community, and country. He attended Belmont Schools and furthered his education at Belmont Technical School, where he earned an associate degree. A proud veteran, Samuel served in the Army Reserves, embodying the values of duty and service throughout his life. For many years, Samuel worked as a machine technician for Sauer, previously known as Volkman, where he was admired for his work ethic and expertise. His career was a testament to his commitment and skill, earning him the respect of colleagues and friends alike. Samuel was a devoted member of the Stanley Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, contributing to the community with integrity and brotherhood. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was a valued member of Mariposa Baptist Church. Away from work and service, Samuel found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid deep-sea fisherman and hunter, often sharing tales of his adventures with a glint in his eye. Known for his quick wit and humor, he brought laughter to all who knew him. Samuel shared a beautiful and enduring marriage of 55 years with his beloved wife, Nellie Smith Young. Together, they built a loving family, and he is survived by his two children, Timothy Lee Young and Kimisha "Sissy" Campbell, as well as his son-in-law Greg Campbell and daughter-in-law Kim Call. Samuel's legacy continues through his seven grandchildren, Amberlee Shuping (Trevor), Tyler Young, Lauren Anson (Dillon), Makenzie Brunner (Dustin), Devon Young, Caleb Campbell (Meredith), and David Trull Jr., and his 12 great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life. Samuel's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and kindness. His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
