It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Samuel Lee Downing, who departed from this world peacefully on August 13, 2026, at Ayers Health and Rehab Center in Trenton, Florida. Born on November 29, 1935, in Wilcox, Florida, Samuel lived a life filled with devotion, love, and service.
Samuel was born to Thomas F and Florence V Downing, who instilled in him the values of hard work and faith. At the tender age of 13, following the death of his father, Samuel took on the responsibility of the family farm, leaving school after the eighth grade. His dedication to family and his resilient spirit were evident from an early age.
In 1955, Samuel married the love of his life, Eleanor L Smith. Together, they built a life of love and companionship, sharing 71 beautiful years of marriage until Eleanor's passing. Their union was blessed with three children: S Lane Downing (Michelle), Donna M McClelland (Roy), and Deana L Tumlin (Thomas), who brought immense joy and pride into Samuel’s life.
Samuel was a proud veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960, stationed in Tacoma, Washington, where he worked as a cook for his unit. His service to his country was a testament to his dedication and selflessness.
A man of faith, Samuel was a devoted member of the Church of Christ since 1951. His commitment to his faith was unwavering, and he served as a song leader for many years, endeavoring to serve the Lord in every way possible.
Samuel's life was rich with the simple pleasures he cherished. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, pursuits that brought him peace and joy. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a faithful Christian who touched the lives of many with his kindness and integrity.
Samuel leaves behind a legacy of love through his children, 14 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, who will forever hold his memory in their hearts. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Eleanor, his parents, his siblings, and his granddaughters, Melissa and Marissa Tumlin.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Ayers Health And Rehab Center, Haven Hospice and Tri-County Nursing Home with the love and care they providedto Samuel during his final days. Samuel was deeply thankful for the love and compassion shown to him.
A service to honor Samuel’s life will be held on August 22, 2026, with Visitation at 11:00 AM and Services at 12:00 PM at Rick Gooding Funeral Home, located at 1301 N Young Blvd., Chiefland, Florida.
May Samuel Lee Downing rest in eternal peace, his life a testament to love, service, and faith. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
