In Loving Memory
Samuel R. Claiborne
June 20, 1939 — May 7, 2026
In loving memory, we celebrate the life of Samuel Claiborne, a man whose heart was as expansive as his smile, and whose spirit touched all who had the privilege of knowing him. Born on June 20, 1939, in Richmond, Virginia, Samuel's journey through life was marked by resilience, love, and an unwavering dedication to his family and community. Samuel peacefully departed this world on May 7, 2026, due to complications from a massive stroke, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and hard work that will forever be cherished.
Samuel was the beloved son of Daisy and Randolph Claiborne. Growing up in Richmond, he received his education from a colored-only elementary school, completing up to the sixth grade. Despite the challenges of his time, Samuel's determination and work ethic propelled him into a life full of diverse experiences. From his humble beginnings shining shoes, he went on to work in factory settings and custodial services, ultimately finding a unique opportunity as a chauffeur for Muhammad Ali and his manager, Herbert Muhammad. His varied career path concluded with delivering medical supplies and biohazardous materials for Chestnut Hill Hospital, though he found great joy in his hobby of ridesharing for the ACME supermarket.
In 1962, Samuel married his sweetheart, Barbara Landis, in Richmond, Virginia. Together, they embarked on a journey that took them from Richmond to Chicago, Illinois, and finally to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1983. Their union was blessed with two sons, Donnel and Randy, and later with the joy of grandchildren Darrel and Tynia, and great-grandchildren Egypt and Cairo.
Samuel was a devoted family man, always ensuring those he loved had what they needed. His life was a testament to hard work and selflessness, often working beyond his shifts to provide and care for his family and friends. He was a man of deep faith, a loyal member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and found solace and strength in reading his Bible.
Those who knew Samuel will remember him for his charming smile, positive outlook, and unyielding belief that God would make everything okay. He delighted in life's simple pleasures: long drives, watching sports, playing the lottery, and solving crossword puzzles. Yet, his greatest joy was found in the presence of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his days.
Samuel is predeceased by his father, Randolph Claiborne, his brothers, Alick and Francis Claiborne, and his beloved wife, Barbara. He leaves behind a family whose lives are forever enriched by his love and kindness—his sons, Donnel and Randy; his grandchildren, Darrel and Tynia; and his great-grandchildren, Egypt and Cairo.
A memorial service to honor Samuel's remarkable life will be held on May 17, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Samuel Claiborne Memorial Service. In this gathering, we will celebrate a man whose heart and spirit will forever be in our hearts. As his family lovingly expresses, "We love you, Grandpa, and will never forget everything you’ve done for us. You will forever be in our hearts."
May Samuel Claiborne rest in eternal peace, his legacy living on in the countless hearts he touched.
