Sammy Leyston Wagner

July 12, 1954 — July 8, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sammy Leyston Wagner, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Sammy departed this world on July 8, 2026, just four days shy of his 72nd birthday, with the peace that comes from a life well-lived and a heart full of faith. Born on July 12, 1954, in Coats, North Carolina, Sammy was the cherished son of the late Clarence and Mozelle Wagner. He was raised in a home filled with love and values that he would carry throughout his life, and he was a proud graduate of Coats High School. Sammy's career began in the telecommunications industry, where he dedicated 37 years of service. His work ethic was unmatched, and his colleagues often spoke of his integrity and kindness. After retiring from telecommunications, Sammy found joy in teaching as a substitute school teacher for five years, and later as a transport driver for various Hendrick dealerships for another five years. His passion for helping others extended beyond his professional life; he was deeply involved in the youth ministry at Coats Baptist Church, where he guided and inspired many young hearts. In 1985, Sammy married the love of his life, Carolyn Wagner. Together, they built a life rooted in love and mutual respect. Carolyn, along with their daughters, Samantha Patton and her husband Kirk, Casey Nunnery and her husband Daniel, and stepdaughter Christie Osorio, were the center of Sammy's world. As a devoted family man, Sammy cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren: Katelyn Phillips and her husband Zac, Maddie Stephens, Joey Nunnery, Will Nunnery, and step-grandchildren Beau Hendrickson, Stephany Orozi, and Allison Osorio. His legacy of love continues to bloom through his great-grandchildren Winslee Phillips, and step-great-grandchildren Joey Molina, Bell Hendrickson, Faith Hendrickson, and Beau Hendrickson. Sammy is also survived by his sister, Patricia Lewter, and her husband Sammy, who shared in countless family memories and supported him throughout his life. Sammy's departure leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his spirit will forever be remembered through the lives he touched and the love he shared. His faith was unwavering, and he faced his final days with the assurance that he was going to see Jesus. A memorial service will be held on July 8, 2026 to honor Sammy's life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations be made to Coats Baptist Church youth ministry, in remembrance of Sammy's generous spirit and commitment to helping others. Sammy will be dearly missed, but his legacy of love, faith, and kindness will live on in all who knew him.
