In Loving Memory
Sakiyah Amani Ford
December 4, 2007 — March 19, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sakiyah Amani Ford, affectionately known to many as "Chunky," "Baby D," or "Kaya." Sakiyah departed this world on March 19, 2026, at the tender age of 18, after a brave and valiant battle with illness. Her bright spirit and infectious laughter were born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 4, 2007, and have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Sakiyah was the cherished daughter of Charlotte D. Kirkland and Demetrius J. Whitehurst Sr. She was the beloved spouse of Omarion, with whom she shared a warmth and connection that was palpable to all who saw them together. Though her time with us was tragically cut short, Sakiyah's legacy continues through her surviving family: one stepchild, one brother from her mother's side, two brothers from her father's side, four sisters from her mother's side, and two sisters from her father's side. She also leaves behind seven treasured cousins: Yvette, Chara, Nevaeh, Tania, Fatima, Jiraiya, Jeremy, Sharia, Ayanna, Arian, and Rose.
Preceded in death by her grandmother Sharon Denise Miller, cousin Mariah Summers, cousin Omarion Freeman, aunt Debbie Summers, and a host of other dear family members and friends, Sakiyah now rests alongside those who went before her, their spirits reunited.
Sakiyah's educational journey took her to Peoria High School in Phoenix, and she continued her studies at Thrive Point until her passing in 2026. She excelled academically, consistently earning A's and B's, and was known for her sharp intellect and inquisitive nature.
Although Sakiyah never served in the military, her strength and courage in facing life's challenges were akin to that of a seasoned soldier. She did not have traditional employment, but she found joy and fulfillment in caring for children, frequently expressing her desire to have her own family one day. Her dream career was to become a mortician—a testament to her unique blend of compassion and curiosity about the world.
Sakiyah was a talented cheerleader, cook, and hairstylist, and her singing brought joy to those around her. Her personal characteristics were as varied and colorful as her interests; she was joyful, playful, and caring, often putting others' needs before her own. Known for her humor and sometimes mischievous nature, she had a knack for keeping the peace and, at times, stirring the pot. Her heart was big, and her love for others was evident to all who knew her.
A service to honor and celebrate Sakiyah's life will be held on April 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the First Funeral Service, located at 501 East Dunlap Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona 85020. We extend our deepest gratitude to the healthcare professionals, social workers, and staff who supported Sakiyah throughout her illness, providing her with comfort and care in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sakiyah's memory to organizations supporting young people facing illness, ensuring her spirit of care and compassion continues to touch lives.
Sakiyah Amani Ford's light shone brightly in her short time with us, and her memory will forever be cherished. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love she gave so freely in life.
