Ruth Ellen Ray

August 6, 1944 — June 1, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ruth Ellen Ray, a beloved mother, stepmother, aunt, and cherished friend, who departed this world on June 1, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on August 6, 1944, in the warm embrace of Oklahoma, Ruth was a beacon of love and compassion to all who knew her. Ruth was the treasured daughter of the late Teddy and Gladys Chapman. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Dell Ray, whom she married on May 7, 1999, in Plainview, Texas. Their union was one of mutual respect, love, and shared joys, a testament to the enduring power of companionship. Ruth was also predeceased by her five brothers, Thurman, Ted, Bill, Woody, and Tommy Chapman, and her sister, Juanda Brewer, who she held dear in her heart. Ruth dedicated her life to the service of others, working as a cafeteria worker for many years. Her warm smile and kind words were a source of comfort and joy to the countless children and colleagues she encountered each day. Her work was not just a job, but a calling, and she fulfilled it with grace and dedication. In her personal life, Ruth found joy in the simple pleasures. She was an avid crocheter, her hands weaving love into every stitch. Her creations were gifts to family and friends, each piece a testament to her patience and skill. She cherished spending time with her family, delighting in the laughter and warmth that only family can bring. Her loyal companion, her dog Oreo, was by her side, providing her with unconditional love and companionship. Ruth was also a great admirer of Westerns, finding excitement and nostalgia in their tales of adventure and heroism. These stories, with their timeless lessons of courage and justice, resonated with her own values and spirit. Ruth leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness in the hearts of her surviving family members: her son, David Payne; her stepchildren, Michael and his wife Julie Ray, Lindell and his wife Sonia Ray, and Deborah and Boyshare Lbsraui. She is also survived by her loving niece, Theresa Aldrich, who holds many cherished memories of their time together. Her legacy continues through her seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her spirit of kindness, compassion, and resilience. Ruth's family was her pride and joy, her greatest treasure. We invite family and friends to celebrate Ruth's life and honor her memory. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, a testament to a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of everyday moments. Ruth Ellen Ray will be dearly missed, but her memory will forever be a guiding light for all who were fortunate to be touched by her warmth and kindness. May she rest in eternal peace.
