September 18, 1997 — July 31, 2026

In loving memory of Russell Matthew Cantrell, who left us far too soon on July 31, 2026. Born on September 18, 1997, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Russell was a beacon of light and love to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Russell, affectionately known as Russ, was a devoted son to his mother, Elizabeth Cantrell, and the late Julian Cantrell. He was a cherished brother to Christina Cantrell and a beloved fiancé to Jayla Weaver. Engaged for just six months, Russ and Jayla were eagerly planning their wedding, set for December 31, 2026, marking the culmination of their beautiful eight-year journey together, which began when they met as first responders in Puerto Rico. Russ's commitment to helping others was evident in his career as a Forensic Crime Scene Analyst in New York, a role he embraced for a year. Prior to that, he served as a paramedic in Puerto Rico for eight years, where he courageously stood on the frontline, saving countless lives. His dedication to his work was fueled by a profound sense of duty and compassion. A graduate of Wesleyan University with a Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Russ was not only a brilliant mind but also a kind soul. His love for cooking was his way of expressing care, as he often shared meals with those around him. Volunteering and supporting his community, especially in lower-income areas, was another testament to his generous spirit. Additionally, Russ found joy and discipline in kickboxing, a passion he pursued with vigor. Russell's warm smile had the power to light up any room, and he was known for his loving and protective nature. His ability to make others smile was a gift he shared freely, embodying a life dedicated to uplifting those around him. He is survived by his loving fiancé, Jayla Weaver; his sister, Christina Cantrell; his sister-in-law, Brittany Mccrea; his mother-in-law, Yvonne Weaver; his brother-in-law, Michael Daniel’s; and a host of adoring nieces, nephews, and cousins. He joins in eternal rest his father, Julian Cantrell; his father-in-law, Jared Weaver; and his grandfather, Raphael Cantrell. A service to honor and celebrate Russell's life will be held on August 7, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Funeraria Cristo Rey, located at Carr. #2 Km 64.5 Candelaria, Arecibo, PR, 00688, Puerto Rico. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations be made to a charity of your choice, in Russ's memory. The Cantrell family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has reached out during this difficult time. They wish to remind all those who may be struggling mentally to seek support, emphasizing that you are not alone and that your presence is deeply valued. "We love you, Russ," they express with profound sorrow and enduring love.
