Rubye Sue H. Smith, a beloved matriarch whose life was a tapestry of love, faith, and resilience, passed away peacefully at her home on February 15, 2026, at the age of 106. Born on September 11, 1919, in High Point, North Carolina, Rubye was the cherished daughter of James Alvin and Allene Evans. She was a beacon of warmth and wisdom to all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy that will be treasured for generations. Rubye’s life was marked by a profound dedication to her family and community. She was predeceased by her dear parents, James Alvin Evans and Allene Evans, her first husband, Luther Henderson, her second husband, Sanford Smith, her siblings Mayfield Evans, Robert Evans, Emmit Evans, and her sister Laura Taylor. Her memory will be lovingly carried forward by her devoted daughters, Karen W. Butler and Janice K. Hill, her stepchildren Barbra Ballen and Darryl Smith, and her cherished grandchildren, Karen Marcia Goodwin, Antonio (Tony) Hill, Milton P. Williams, and Kimberly Williams. Rubye was also blessed with five great-grandchildren—La Chanta Garrett, Alfred L. Boyd, Jonathan Goodwin, Joshua Goodwin, Kristoff Swinton, Alexis P. Hill—and five great-great-grandchildren, who will continue to uphold her legacy. Rubye graduated from Dudley High School in 1937 and pursued her passion for beauty and care at Mako Beauty College, graduating in 1947. Her professional life was marked by an impressive 30-year career at the Pentagon, where her skills and dedication were highly valued. A woman of faith, Rubye was an active member of Hughes Memorial United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C., for sixty years. Her service was unwavering as she contributed her time and talents to the Nursing Unit, Communion Steward, Usher Board, Choir, and the Progressive Club. Her church community was a cornerstone of her life, and she cherished the friendships she cultivated there. Rubye was known for her quick wit, warm smile, and the welcoming home she always maintained. She found joy in hosting family events, cooking, traveling, and shopping. She was truly devoted to her family and had a great love for dancing, which brought her immense happiness throughout her life. A celebration of Rubye’s remarkable life will be held on March 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Hughes Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 25-53rd Street N.E., Washington, D.C., 20019. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all church members, family friends, and caregivers for their kind words, meals, and cards during this time of loss. In honoring Rubye’s life, we remember a woman who exemplified grace, strength, and love. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
