August 22, 1941 — August 15, 2026

It is with deep sadness and heartfelt love that we announce the passing of Roy John Moody, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on August 15, 2026. Born in the picturesque town of St. Helena, CA, on August 22, 1941, Roy graced this world with his kindness, creativity, and humor for 85 years. Roy was a man of remarkable talent and wit, a graduate of the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. His career began as an Assistant Art Director at Playboy in Chicago, where he not only honed his skills but also collected a treasure trove of stories that would entertain his family for years to come. Later, Roy found his niche at the Chicago Sun-Times, working as a page designer until his retirement in 2006. Above all, Roy loved his family. He is survived by his loving brother, William Moody, and sisters, Sharon Powers and Jan Ilmberger. His legacy continues through his children, daughter Dana Moody and son Mark Moody, along with his daughter-in-law Kris. Roy was affectionately known as "Poppy" to his adoring grandchildren: Thomas Moody and his wife Kristen, Emily Brockbank and her husband Chris, Erin Saeed and her husband Jordan, Dana Donovan and his wife Priscilla, and Dani Donovan. As "Great Poppy," he brought joy and laughter to his great-grandchildren: Max, Ellie, Lydia, Quinn, Scarlett, and Rosie. Roy's love for old movies was matched only by his pride in his family. His family fondly remembers his vast library of stories, some of which, especially those from his Playboy days, will remain cherished family secrets. A celebration of Roy's life will take place on October 9th, at his grandson Tom Moody's home in Libertyville for family and friends that knew him, from 2 to 8 PM. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to reach out to his son Mark at 847-502-2912 for more details. Roy John Moody will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of laughter, and creativity will continue to inspire us all.

In lieu of flowers, the family of Roy John Moody welcomes donations to a charity, nonprofit, church, or organization of your choosing.
