Roxie Ann Short, a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to resilience, love, and strength, peacefully passed away at home on March 19, 2026, after valiantly battling an illness for 16 years. She was 86 years old.
Born on January 26, 1940, in the heart of Mississippi, Roxie was the cherished daughter of Mary and EJ Short. Though her journey in life was marked with profound losses, having been predeceased by her beloved parents, all her siblings, and her four children, Roxie's spirit was never dimmed. Instead, she found immense joy and purpose in her extensive family, including 32 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren, each one a testament to the legacy of love and devotion she leaves behind.
Roxie's life was enriched by her enduring marriage to Willie Short. The two were wed on May 19, 1957, in the sunshine of Florida, embarking on a partnership that spanned nearly seven decades. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, shared dreams, and unwavering support. Their love story was one for the ages, a beacon of commitment that inspired all who knew them.
A proud graduate of Lincoln High School for Blacks in Mississippi, Roxie went on to break barriers by earning her law degree. She dedicated 40 years of her life to the legal profession, where her tenacity and brilliance were evident. Yet, Roxie was a woman of many talents and passions; following her illustrious law career, she pursued her entrepreneurial spirit by opening four successful hair salons in the Chicago area, leaving three thriving establishments as part of her legacy.
Roxie was not only a force in her professional endeavors but also a devoted member of the Grandson Temple Church of God and Christ for 48 years. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her through both joyous and challenging times. Her humor, outgoing nature, and kind-heartedness left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. To know Roxie was to experience her warmth and unwavering encouragement, embodying her life motto, "If there’s a will, there’s a way."
A service to celebrate Roxie's extraordinary life will be held on March 26, 2026, at 3:30 PM at Leak and Son, located at 7838 S Cottage Grove. Family, friends, and all whose lives she touched are invited to join in honoring her memory.
Roxie Ann Short will be remembered not only for her accomplishments and the lives she changed but for the love she gave so freely and the light she shared with the world. Her legacy will continue to inspire strength and perseverance in all who were fortunate enough to know her.
