Rosebud Margaret Stepney

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Rosebud Stepney, who departed this life on August 18, 2026, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on January 15, 1941, in Sumter, South Carolina, Rosebud was the cherished daughter of the late Eugene Reid and Ruth Richardson. Rosebud was a woman of grace, strength, and unwavering determination. She graduated from Williston High School in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1959, and continued her education at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Sociology with honors in 1963. While there, she joined the Alpha Kalpa Alpha (AKA)Sorority and her vibrant spirit was recognized when she was crowned the NC A&T Homecoming Queen. Her passion for learning was unending, and later in life, she returned to her studies, obtaining a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology and was only two courses shy of her Doctorate. In 1966, Rosebud married the love of her life, Ralph Stepney. Together, they shared 46 beautiful years, raising three wonderful children: Reginald Stepney, Monica Gathers, and Brian Stepney. The love they shared was a testament to their devotion to family and to each other. Rosebud's career was as varied as it was impactful. In the 1970s, she dedicated herself to the Monroe County Department of Social Services as a social worker. Her natural affinity for teaching found expression in her work as a substitute teacher in the Rochester City School District. Later, she pursued a nursing career, serving in various nursing homes in Rochester until her retirement in 1999. Even in retirement, Rosebud continued to touch lives as a crisis counselor for victims of domestic violence, offering solace and understanding to those in need. Her nurturing nature extended beyond her family, touching the lives of everyone she met. Known for her warmth and generosity, Rosebud was a beacon of light, making friends effortlessly and brightening any room with her smile and wit. Rosebud cherished her friendships, especially her adventures to the casino with her dear friend Jackie, and her reunions in North Carolina, where she danced and celebrated life with her high school and college friends. Her love for life was infectious, and she will be remembered as a free spirit and the life of every party. Rosebud was a devoted member of the Living Word Temple of Restoration, where her faith was a source of strength and comfort throughout her life. She is survived by her loving children, Reginald Stepney, Monica Gathers (Chris), and Brian Stepney; her cherished siblings, Elizabeth Richardson, Brian Walker (Gorety), and Carol Walker; and her adored grandchildren, Miles James and Jeremiah Postell. She also leaves behind her close friends Jackie, Ross, Malinda, Geraldine, Lolita and Billy. Rosebud was predeceased by her beloved husband Ralph, her parents, her sister Patsy Priant, and her brother Keith Richardson. A service celebrating Rosebud’s remarkable life will be held on September 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Living Word Temple of Restoration, located at 219 Stenson St, Rochester, NY 14606. The family will receive guests at their residence, 1634 Norton St., following the service. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered prayers, love, and support during this difficult time. Special thanks to D.M. Williams for their professional services, Bishop Turner and the church staff, as well as all the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff who cared for Rosebud throughout her journey. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rosebud's memory can be made to a charity of your choice that supports cancer research or domestic violence victims. Rosebud Stepney's legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
