Rose Mathieu
March 23, 1935 — October 15, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Rose Mathieu, who departed this world on October 15, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on March 23, 1935, in the vibrant city of Cap-Haïtien, Haiti, Rose's journey was one marked by resilience, love, and a steadfast dedication to her family and community.
Rose's life was a testament to the power of giving and the impact of selflessness. Although she did not have the opportunity to pursue formal education herself, she was committed to ensuring that countless children in Haiti received the education they deserved. Rose tirelessly paid yearly tuition for many young minds, planting seeds of hope and opportunity in the hearts of her beloved homeland. Her generosity knew no bounds, and those who visited her were met with her warm hospitality and often left with both their bellies and spirits nourished.
A true matriarch, Rose cherished her family above all. She leaves behind her beloved children, Yvrose Mathieu and Michaelle Mathieu Gaston, who carry forward her legacy of compassion and strength. Her grandchildren, Joel Lafortune and Abigail Yasmine Gaston, and her great-granddaughter, Gabrielle Angel Lafortune, were the light of her life, bringing her immense joy and pride.
Rose also leaves behind her cherished siblings, Raymond, Joseph, Claude, and Yvette Mathieu, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, including Milou, Dada, Kettlie, Sherline, Rosny, and Frandy, along with many others whose lives she touched in countless ways.
Rose had a deep love for her birthplace and a dream of witnessing a brighter future for Haiti. She loved staying informed about the news, especially regarding the Haitian government, often reflecting on the past and expressing her hopes for the future. Though she did not see her dream realized, her passion and advocacy for change remain an enduring inspiration.
A service to honor Rose's remarkable life will be held at Caribe, located at 1922 Utica Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Rose are invited to join in celebrating her life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Rose's memory, continuing her legacy of generosity and kindness.
