Rose Johnson
April 24, 1945 — April 30, 2026
In loving memory of Rose Johnson, a beacon of warmth and kindness, who passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on April 24, 1945, in Silver Springs, Maryland, Rose's life was a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering devotion to family and community.
Rose was the cherished daughter of Mary Ophelia and Crenshaw Richards, who predeceased her, along with her beloved husband, Alonzo Johnson, and their dear son, Robert. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Jolene and Rosie-May, a multitude of foster children who found a nurturing home under her care, and an extensive family tree that includes 25 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Rose's life was a rich tapestry woven with vibrant threads of creativity and service. She graduated high school and moved to Buffalo, New York, where she pursued her passion for art. Her love of drawing and painting was a lifelong pursuit that brought beauty and joy to those around her. Rose was not only a homemaker but also a pillar of strength and compassion in her community, opening her heart and home to over 100 foster children throughout her lifetime. Her legacy of love continues to thrive in the lives she touched, many of whom remained in contact with her long after leaving her care.
An active member of the First Baptist Church, Rose's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She sang in the church choir, gracing the congregation with her melodious voice and warm spirit. Beyond her church, she was a proud member of the Colored Musicians Club and participated in various art and African American history organizations in Buffalo, dedicating her time to causes that enriched her community and celebrated her heritage.
Rose's warmth and humor left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was known for her generous spirit and her unwavering commitment to ensuring that every child she encountered felt cherished and secure. Her family fondly recalls her as a woman who "gave everything she had to make sure children felt loved."
In accordance with Rose's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held in her honor. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your local LGBTQ charity of choice in her son Robert's name, or in the name of a loved one, or to PFLAG - Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. This gesture echoes Rose's commitment to love and acceptance, values she held dear throughout her life.
As we celebrate the life of Rose Johnson, we remember her as a guiding light, whose legacy of love and compassion will continue to illuminate the hearts of her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched. Her spirit will forever remain a source of inspiration and hope.
