Rosa Lee Goen
September 27, 1938 — July 3, 2026
Rosa Lee Goen, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on September 27, 1938, in Konawa, Oklahoma, Rosa Lee was a beacon of love and strength to all who knew her. She was the beloved daughter of Oma Lee Olvera, who preceded her in death, along with her devoted husband, Melvin Earl Goen, and her son-in-law, William Bradley Hatcher.
Rosa Lee’s journey of love and commitment began in 1956 when she married Melvin Earl Goen. Together, they nurtured a loving family, raising three remarkable daughters, Sandy (Jeff), Sheri (Matt), and Linda, with unwavering determination and hope. Her family was the heart of her world, and she took immense pride in her grandchildren, Jeffrey (Megan), Stephanie (Victor), Jaclyn (Emlyn), Lindsey, and Melanie, as well as her three great-grandchildren, who brought her boundless joy.
Education was a cornerstone of Rosa's life. After graduating from Delano High School, she pursued further learning at Bakersfield College. Her passion for education blossomed into a fulfilling 20-year teaching career. "Mrs. Goen," as she was fondly known, began her journey at Carden Elementary, where she taught English using the Carden Method. She later transitioned to Garces High School, inspiring students in algebra and geometry and leading the academic girls club. Her dedication to her students was evident in her love for exposing them to museums, music, historical sites, food, flowers, and the finer things in life.
Rosa Lee was an active member of the 60s Plus Club at Cal State Bakersfield, where she found joy in fellowship, volunteering, and attending musical events. Her love for community and giving back was a testament to her kind spirit.
Family gatherings were the highlight of Rosa Lee’s life. Her home was filled with the aroma of bacon every Saturday, as she prepared hearty breakfasts and unforgettable meals. Her chili beans and cornbread, beef stew, burritos, and tacos were family favorites. Rosa orchestrated Sunday dinners with her husband's perfectly cooked steak, complemented by her delicious side dishes and homemade ice cream. Thanksgiving was a cherished tradition, with Rosa Lee’s remarkable dressing as the centerpiece.
Known for her determination and compassionate heart, Rosa was always ready to help those in need and had a special love for dogs. Her siblings, Carolyn, Michael, and Michelle, and her cousin, Gary (Sing Yi), will forever cherish her memory.
A service to celebrate Rosa's life will be held on July 24, 2026, at 12:30 PM at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, located at 30338 E. Bear Mountain Blvd, Arvin, CA 93203. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice.
Rosa Lee Goen's life was a testament to love, resilience, and grace. Her legacy will endure in the hearts of her family and all those she touched. As the family reflects on her profound impact, they offer this special message: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16
May Rosa's soul find eternal peace and her memory be a blessing to all who were privileged to know her.
