It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Rosa Lee Gendraw, who departed this world peacefully on June 2, 2026, surrounded by her cherished family in Milledgeville, Georgia, at the age of 84. Born on July 9, 1941, in the same nurturing heart of Milledgeville, Rosa was the beloved daughter of Hindel and Arzella Saulsberry, who have predeceased her.
Rosa's journey through life was one marked by love, devotion, and service to others. She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Sammie Lee Gendraw Sr., with whom she shared 64 years of a beautiful marriage. Together, they crafted a life rich in love and family, marrying on October 31, 1959. Their union was blessed with two wonderful children, Vernita Childs and Sammie Lee Gendraw Jr., who, along with their spouses Michael Childs and Marcia Gendraw, brought Rosa immense joy and pride.
Rosa was a pillar of strength and warmth for her family. Her kindness and unconditional love were felt by all who knew her. She was a nurturing mother, a proud grandmother to Aaron Gendraw, Darien Gendraw, Corey Childs, and Xavion Gendraw, and a doting great-grandmother to Darien Gendraw Jr. Her legacy of love continues through her brother, Ben Dixon; her sister-in-law, Christine Newton; her nieces, April Thomas and Audra Dixon; and many other loving relatives and friends.
Rosa attended grade school in her hometown and proudly graduated from Baldwin High School in 1959. She embarked on a fulfilling career as a patient care assistant at Central State Hospital, where she dedicated 32 years of her life to caring for others with compassion and grace. Upon her retirement, Rosa spent the next 32 years enjoying the company of her family and friends, cultivating her love for gardening, sharing her culinary talents, and faithfully trying her luck with the lottery.
Rosa's giving heart was well-known in her community; she was a beacon of warmth and generosity. Her home was always open, and she had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and loved. Her legacy of kindness and her selfless spirit will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know her.
A celebration of Rosa's life will be held on June 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, located at 685 Georgia Hwy 24, Milledgeville, GA 31061.
