Roosevelt Rushin
June 2, 1943 — March 1, 2026
Roosevelt Rushin, a remarkable man whose life was a testament to dedication, service, and love, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 82 years old. Born on June 2, 1943, in Americus, Georgia, Roosevelt was the beloved son of the late John and Mary Rushin.
Roosevelt's early years in Americus were marked by a deep-rooted sense of community and family, values that would guide him throughout his life. He graduated from West High School with ambitions that led him to serve his country with distinction. In 1972, Roosevelt enlisted in the United States Air Force, embarking on a military career that spanned nearly three decades. Rising to the rank of Master Sergeant, he exemplified leadership, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to his country, retiring in 2000.
In 1975, Roosevelt married the love of his life, Betty Little. Together, they built a life grounded in mutual respect and shared dreams. Their union was blessed with three wonderful children: Robert, Mickey, and Rochelle. Roosevelt's role as a father was one he cherished dearly, and he was a guiding light in the lives of his children, always providing love, wisdom, and support.
Beyond his military service, Roosevelt was deeply involved in his community. He served as an Abbott football coach, where he not only taught the fundamentals of the sport but also imparted valuable life lessons to countless young athletes. His career with the Akron Police Department further underscored his commitment to service, as he worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of his community.
Roosevelt is survived by his cherished wife, Betty, who stood by his side with unwavering love and support. His legacy lives on through his children: Robert, Mickey, and his wife Laquita, and Rochelle, along with her husband Adam. He was a proud grandfather to thirteen grandchildren and a doting great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
Roosevelt was preceded in death by his loving parents, John and Mary Rushin. Though their loss was profound, the values they instilled in him continued to shine brightly through his actions and influence.
Those who knew Roosevelt will forever remember him as a man of honor, integrity, and immense kindness. His presence was a steadying force, and his warm smile and gentle demeanor touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A service to celebrate Roosevelt's life will be held on March 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Stuart Calhoun, located at 1600 Thornton Avenue. Family, friends, and all whose lives were enriched by Roosevelt are invited to join in honoring a life so beautifully lived.
