Ronald Wayne Purcell (Ronnie)
February 6, 1951 — September 28, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Ronald Wayne Purcell, affectionately known as Ronnie, who peacefully departed this world on September 28, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 6, 1951, in Matador, Texas, Ron lived a life marked by devotion, kindness, and a steadfast commitment to his family and community.
Ron was the cherished son of Duane and Ann Purcell, who preceded him in death, along with his brother Rick and nephew Mike Hayhurst. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Rose, and their sons, Shad (April) and Wayne (Nanci). Ron was the proud grandfather of Elizabeth, Samuel, Patrick, and Cooper. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Donna Hayhurst (Jim), and a host of extended family and friends who will deeply miss his presence.
A graduate of Dumas High School in 1969, Ron was recognized for his leadership and charisma, serving as Student Body President and earning accolades as Student of the Year and Most Likely to Succeed. These qualities would define his life, as he pursued various career paths with enthusiasm and dedication. He spent 20 years in management at Levi Strauss before retiring to a second career in commercial landscaping, where he found joy in working with his hands and seeing projects through to completion.
Ron and Rose made their home in Amarillo, where they were active members of Eastridge Baptist Church before moving to San Antonio in 1985. There, they became valued members of Medical Center Baptist Church and served faithfully for 27 years at Crossroads Baptist Church. Ron put his faith in Jesus, trusting Him as his Savior. He demonstrated that by seizing every opportunity to help others.
A man of deep faith and service, one of Ron's greatest joys was leading a team of church members in preparing and serving hot meals to the homeless in downtown San Antonio. He had a genuine love for people, taking the time to listen and lend a helping hand whenever possible. His warmth and humor uplifted all who met him, and he was known for his ability to tell a good story or pull off a harmless prank, always with respect and kindness.
Ron found peace and pleasure in the simple things—fixing and mending, especially for those in need, and camping in the cool air of the Rocky Mountains. His life was a testament to the power of community and the importance of generosity.
A celebration of Ron's life will be held on October 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Crossroads Baptist Church, located at 8300 Tezel Road, San Antonio, Texas 78254. Friends and family are invited to gather for a time of visitation at 1:00 PM in the sanctuary prior to the service. For those who cannot attend in person, the service will be available via livestream at on YouTube.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Crossroads Baptist Church San Antonio Texas Sound system in Ron's memory. They also encourage all who knew Ron to honor his legacy by reaching out to others with kindness and support, just as he did throughout his life.
Ronald Wayne Purcell leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering faith. He will be greatly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
