It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald J. Royal Sr., affectionately known as "Big Papa," who left this world on March 24, 2026, at the age of 74. Ronald passed away peacefully at Ochsner Hospital Westbank in the loving presence of his family. Born on March 15, 1952, in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana, Ronald was a beacon of light and laughter to all who knew him. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph J. Royal and Dorothy Videau - Royal, who instilled in him the values of kindness, humor, and resilience. Ronald was a proud alumnus of West Jefferson High School, where he laid the foundations for a life filled with hard work and dedication. He spent an impressive 41 years working at Avondale Shipyard, where his unwavering commitment and work ethic earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Upon his retirement, Ronald continued to cherish the friendships he had made and spoke fondly of his time there. In 1993, Ronald found his soulmate in Mary Victoria Royal. After 14 years of companionship, they married on October 5, 2013, and shared 12 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered around family, love, and laughter. Ronald was a devoted husband to Victoria and a loving father to his children: Ronald Jr., Jeffery (Erica), Darwin (Shameka) Royal, Joesia Wilson III, Joshua Wilson Sr., and his late daughter, Anissa Royal. He was also a cherished father figure to his daughter, Suzanne Wilson. Family meant everything to Ronald, and he was the proud grandfather of 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He reveled in the joy of being surrounded by his family, often entertaining them with his infectious jokes and laughter, earning him the endearing nickname "Big Papa." His humor and warmth were a source of comfort and joy, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of his loved ones. Ronald is also survived by his brothers, Prosper and Russell, and his sisters, Sheron Moore and Shelia (Clifford Sr.) Joseph. He was predeceased by his brothers, Donald Sr., Rodney Sr., and Robert Royal Sr., with whom he shared cherished memories that will forever remain in our hearts. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Ochsner Hospital Westbank for their compassionate care and support during Ronald's final days. A special thanks is extended to his granddaughter, Shylla Ford, for her unwavering dedication and love. A celebration of Ronald's life will be held on April 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Davis Mortuary, located at 6820 Westbank Expressway, Marrero, LA 70072. The family welcomes all who knew and loved Ronald to join them in honoring his remarkable life. In this time of mourning, the family would like to thank everyone for their calls, texts, visits, prayers, and words of comfort. Ronald's legacy of love and laughter will live on in our hearts forever. May he rest in eternal peace.
