It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for his life that we announce the passing of Roland E. Baird, who departed peacefully on March 29, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on June 8, 1950, in Alton, Illinois, Roland's journey was one marked by love, laughter, and a steadfast dedication to family and country.
Roland was the cherished son of the late Royal E. Baird and Frances Boker Baird Ray. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Charles W. Baird, and his brother-in-law James Winkle. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jackie, who was his anchor and partner throughout his life.
A proud alumnus of Alton High School, Class of 1970, Roland furthered his education at Lewis and Clark Community College and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. His commitment to serving others was exemplified through his military service; he bravely served with the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971, including a notable tenure with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Blackhorse Unit, in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.
Roland's career was as varied and dynamic as his interests. A passionate baseball enthusiast, he spent a decade working with the St. Louis Cardinals as an usher, where his affinity for the sport and his engaging personality endeared him to fans and players alike.
Known for his quick wit and warm smile, Roland had an innate ability to bring joy to those around him. His jokes and light-hearted comments were more than just words; they were a testament to his belief in making everyone feel welcome and valued. His legacy of kindness and humor will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Roland's memory lives on through his loving family: his children Stacey Cowern (Steve), Amy Crook (Tom Wright), Brian Baird, and Ren'ae Barnes; his brothers Royal E. Baird Jr. (Kelly) and Clark Baird; his sister-in-law Julie Winkle; his grandchildren Megan and Ryan Cowern, and Owen, Quinn, and Willow Wright, who were his pride and joy; and his nieces Emily Meuth (Jake), Allison Patel (Richi), and Karly Mcdonald (Roger).
A service to celebrate Roland's life will be held on March 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Weber Rodney Funeral Home, located at 304 N. Main Street, Edwardsville, IL 62025. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Roland’s memory to the 11th Armored Cavalry’s Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia (11th ACVVC), reflecting his enduring support and camaraderie with his fellow veterans.
