Roger Lee Fields

August 9, 1940 — September 17, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we celebrate the life of Roger Lee Fields, who peacefully passed away on September 17, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on August 9, 1938, in the small town of Bartow, Georgia, Roger's life was a tapestry of love, devotion, hard work, and humility. The son of Robert and Johnitha Fields, Roger was the embodiment of kindness and generosity. Despite having limited formal education, he carved out a successful career, initially working as a private contractor building in-ground pools in Pompano Beach, Florida. Later, he moved to Michigan, where he joined the Ford Motor Company and dedicated 30 years before retiring with a legacy that spoke volumes of his commitment and integrity. Roger's heart found its true companion in Mattie Johnson Fields, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage of 28 and a half years. Together, they built a life filled with shared passions, including gardening, golfing, and bowling, and they enriched their community through their warmth and friendliness. Their journey took them across various states, where they met countless friends and left an indelible mark on everyone they encountered. A man of faith, Roger attended a church in Lithonia, Georgia, where he served as an usher, embodying the spirit of service and connection to his community. Alongside his wife, he was an active member of a bowling league and a golfing team, finding joy in sports and fellowship. Roger's life was a testament to the power of love and laughter. He was known for his gentle smile, his willingness to help others, and his knack for sharing good advice. He cherished making small jokes and seeing the smiles they brought to people's faces. Never one to raise his voice or engage in conflict, Roger's calm demeanor and open heart were a source of comfort to all who knew him. Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Johnitha, and his children Sara Fields McFarley, Cheryl Fields, and Randy Fields, as well as his stepson Michael Reed, Roger leaves behind a loving family who will carry on his legacy. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mattie, and his children Roger Fields, Marsha Fields from South Carolina, Yvonne Fields from Florida, Vanessa Fields from Pennsylvania, Johnny Carson (Gwen) from Michigan, Dwayne Carson from Michigan, and Ivan Fields from Alabama. His family extends to 34 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. A service to honor Roger's remarkable life will be held on October 1, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the James H. Cole Homes For Funerals, Northeast Chapel, located at 16100 Schaefer Hwy., Detroit, Michigan. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Angela's Hospice Center in Waterford, Michigan, and to all who have offered prayers, flowers, cards, and gifts during this time of bereavement. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Roger's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting his spirit of generosity and compassion. Roger Lee Fields will forever be remembered for his unwavering love, his gentle spirit, and the joy he brought into the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
