Roger E. Behre, a man whose life was a tapestry of adventure, service, and love, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on June 24, 1932, in Summit, New Jersey, Roger was the cherished son of Walter and Marguerite Behre. He carried the legacy of his parents with dignity and grace throughout his life. Roger's journey began in Summit, where he graduated from Summit High School before pursuing higher education at the University of Idaho. His path was marked by a strong sense of duty, which led him to serve in the United States Air Force. In 1954, he took his first solo flight, a momentous occasion that set the stage for a distinguished career in aviation. Roger served as a pilot for the Strategic Air Command, flying refueling aircraft, and later joined the New Jersey Air National Guard. During the Vietnam War, his unit played a crucial role in training pilots and navigators for radar patrol and surveillance operations. After his military service, Roger's love of flying found a new home in the commercial aviation industry. He became a flight engineer and pilot for Pan American Airlines, and later for Delta Airlines, traversing the globe from JFK airport. From the DC-8 to the Boeing 747, Roger piloted numerous aircraft to destinations in Europe, South America, and Africa. His volunteer flights to combat zones during Desert Shield and Desert Storm were among his proudest moments, especially when he was able to bring troops back to their loved ones. Roger often quipped that the only time he felt unsafe was driving on the Belt Parkway. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Roger was a dedicated volunteer firefighter with the New Providence Fire Department, serving from 1959 to 1992. He was also a proud member of the American Legion. His commitment to community service was a testament to his generous spirit. Roger had a passion for tennis, which he played recreationally until a persistent tennis elbow led him to discover golf, a sport he enjoyed immensely in his later years. His vegetable garden was a source of joy, and he delighted in sharing his harvest with friends and neighbors. Roger's warmth was truly infectious. Known for his ever-present smile and quick wit, he had a unique ability to make those around him feel valued and at ease. His kindness, humor, and generosity left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He found happiness in the joy of others, often putting their needs above his own. Roger was predeceased by his beloved first wife Claire, as well as his dear siblings Susane and Steven. He is survived by his loving wife Rebecca, his brother Walter, his children James and Karen (and her husband Charles), his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His family extends heartfelt thanks to his Hospice team and the friends who supported him in his final years. In honor of his life and legacy, donations may be made to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization that reflects Roger's commitment to service and community. A private ceremony will be held to celebrate Roger's remarkable life, a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to those he held dear. He will be remembered fondly by all whose lives he touched.
