Roger Bowen

Roger Bowen, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the age of 97. Born September 16, 1928, in Maywood, Illinois, Roger's life was a testament to dedication, love, and service. Roger was the cherished son of Theodore Roosevelt Bowen and Helen Marie Bowen, who predeceased him, along with his beloved wife of 66 years, Dorothy, and his sister, Joyce. He is survived by his three children, Scott Bowen, Janie Knipper (Rick), and John Bowen (Mindy), as well as his brother Fred Bowen (Judy). Roger was a proud grandfather to Kyle Knipper (Katy), Marni Shelley (Erick), Sara Schaefer (Ryan), Michael Knipper (Elaine), Katie Cornick, Kristen Metcalf (Brent), Jamison Bowen (Krista), Angela Ruess (Charlie) and Amy Mahoney (Micheal). He leaves behind a legacy of 21 great-grandchildren who will carry forward his spirit and love, particularly his love of animals and the great outdoors. After graduating from York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois, Roger served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve followed by 4 years in the U.S. Air Force, which included an 18 month tenure in Greenland. He then pursued higher education at Upper Iowa University, where he majored in history and business. A natural leader, he served as Senior Class President and was recognized in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities." Roger's career was marked by his dedication to education and service to others. He held numerous roles at Upper Iowa University, including Alumni Executive Secretary, Admissions Counselor, and Registrar. His career also took him to Loretto Heights College in Denver and Dubuque University in Iowa, where he continued to make a significant impact. His contributions to education and service were recognized in "Who's Who in College and University Administration" and "Personalities of the West and Midwest," and he was a recipient of the Army's Patriotic Civilian Service Award. A man of many talents, Roger was also an author, co-authoring "University Recruits, Company C" in 1991 with Charles B. Clark, which explored the history of men from Upper Iowa University who served during the Civil War. His passion for history and storytelling was well-known, as was his infectious smile and laugh. Roger was an active member of his community, serving on the Iowa Civil War Centennial Commission and participating in numerous state and local organizations and boards. He was also a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In honor of Roger's life, the family will hold a private funeral ceremony. They wish to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Keystone Place in North Liberty, IA, and the compassionate team at Iowa City Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice, reflecting Roger's commitment to care and service or to Upper Iowa University, Bowen/Clark Scholarship. Roger Bowen's life was one of purpose, integrity, and love. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his legacy will continue through his family and the countless lives he touched.
