Rodney Shane Kuchta
December 25, 1955 — May 25, 2026
Rodney Shane Kuchta, cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away quietly and peacefully on May 25, 2026, after an extended battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 70 years old. Born on December 25, 1955, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Rodney's life was a testament to faith, commitment, and integrity, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Rodney was the beloved son of the late Donald James and Naomi Fay Kuchta. He was predeceased by his parents and an infant grandson, Trajan Aaron Rastovski. Rodney's enduring legacy is carried on by his devoted wife of 46 years, Christine Marie Kuchta, whom he eloped with on June 6, 1980, to Elk Point, South Dakota, before celebrating their union with a ceremony in Omaha, Nebraska, the following day.
Rodney will be lovingly remembered by his children: son Nathan (Amy) Kuchta, daughters Megan (Aaron) Rastovski and Heidi (Peng) Li. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren: Andrew and Mary Ellen Kuchta; Genevieve, Adley, and Ashten Rastovski; and Jett, Lulu, and Macy Li. Rodney's sisters, Tracey Long and Donelle (Jay) Waagmeester, along with many nieces, nephews, and treasured friends, also mourn his passing.
A lifelong learner and educator, Rodney graduated from Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls in 1974, earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Phillips University in 1978, and obtained a certification in secondary education from August Dana College in 1979. He was a pioneer in the field of computer education, being the first to receive a Masters degree in Computer Education from the University of Nebraska. Rodney's passion for teaching took him to Avon, Humphrey, Norfolk, Ogallala, and North Platte, where he taught math and computer programming, including at MidPlains Community College and Wayne State College. He was particularly proud of his MathCounts and chess teams, fostering a love for learning and critical thinking in his students.
Rodney was deeply involved in his church communities, serving as a youth group leader, Sunday School teacher, and Awana leader. He cherished Bible studies and was committed to attending worship and men's breakfast even in his final year. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through every challenge and triumph.
Rodney had a zest for life that was evident in his many hobbies and interests. An avid chess player, he was just shy of reaching master level. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and playing games, always finding joy in spending time with his family. His quick wit and love for puns and groaners never failed to bring laughter to those around him. A lifelong fan of the Packers, Rodney also had a soft spot for underdogs and rival teams of local favorites.
A service to celebrate Rodney's remarkable life will be held at Harvest Church, located at 305 Sergeant Square Drive, Sergeant Bluff, IA 51054. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Center for Active Generations at https://siouxlandcenterforactivegenerations.com/donate.
The Kuchta family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Pioneer Valley Living and Rehabilitation, Hospice of the Midwest, and the congregation of Harvest Church, as well as the many friends who visited and supported them during Rodney's final years. Your kindness and prayers have been more than appreciated.
Rodney Shane Kuchta's life was a blessing to all who knew him, and his spirit will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.
