Rodney Charles Ryan

Rodney Charles Ryan, a cherished husband, devoted father, and beloved grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with lung disease. Born on July 27, 1952, in Hannah, North Dakota, Rodney lived a life marked by service, love, and dedication. Rodney was the proud son of Edward Charles Ryan and Olive Irene Hodgins Ryan, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his sisters LaRae Hildonen, ReNae Steinke, Karen Hariseth, and Paula Joy Ryan; his brothers Lowell Kern, Greg Ryan, and Brent Ryan; and his nephew Raymond Kern. Despite these losses, Rodney’s heart remained full of love for his surviving family, including his wife of 41 years, Darla Jean (Brown) Ryan, with whom he shared countless adventures and cherished memories, a brother, Rick Kern, a sister, Claudia Miska, and numerous nieces and nephews. Rodney’s life was enriched by his children: Roni Ryan, Brock Ryan (Teresa), Briah Ryan, Anthony Ryan (Megan), and Megan Schwender (Tom). His legacy continues through his six grandchildren, James Ryan, Sherry Ryan, Kelly Jean Schwender, Adrienne Rose Schwender, and Evelyn Skye Ryan, and his great-grandchild, who brought immense joy to his life. Rodney’s journey began in Hannah, North Dakota, where he graduated from high school in 1970. His sense of duty led him to join the Army, where he served two tours in Vietnam. Upon his return, he married Gayle Fisher, with whom he had three children. Rodney later found love again with Darla, and together they built a beautiful life, welcoming Tony and Megan into their family and later Briah came to live with them in Arkansas. A dedicated employee of the Department of Defense for 42 years, Rodney’s commitment to service didn’t end with his retirement. He continued to serve as an independent contractor, spending significant time in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rodney's career took him and Darla from Colorado to Camden, Arkansas, and eventually to the serene Ozarks of Eureka Springs. In their later years, they moved to Oklahoma to be closer to family and VA doctors. Rodney’s passion for woodworking and carpentry was well known among his family and friends. He found great joy in crafting beautiful pieces, sharing his love for the art with those around him. His grandchildren were a constant source of happiness, and he cherished every moment spent with them. In a final act of generosity, Rodney donated his earthly remains to the Oklahoma University Medical Center for education and research, continuing his legacy of service and compassion for others. A memorial service to celebrate Rodney’s life will be held on September 4, 2026, at 1:00 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 411 N Elm Street, Guthrie, Oklahoma. His remains will be interred in the niche at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Eureka Springs, Arkansas at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Rodney’s memory to a charity of your choice.
