Born on July 16, 1931, in El Paso, Texas, Bobby's life was marked by his unwavering devotion to his family, country, and faith. The son of a single mother during the Great Depression, Bobby's early life was shaped by the challenges of poverty and loss. He experienced the heartache of losing two siblings in childhood, events that forged a deep bond with his mother, who instilled in him the values of hard work and compassion. These formative years nurtured his determination to build a better life for his family, leading him to secretly enter professional boxing matches as a teenager to save money for a home. Bobby excelled in athletics at Bowie High School, gaining recognition in football, wrestling, track and field, and endurance sports. His discipline and perseverance became hallmarks of his character. He attended Texas Western University before being drafted into the United States Marine Corps in 1951 during the Korean War. As a Sergeant and Aircraft Engine Mechanic, he served with distinction, earning several medals for his service. After the war, Bobby moved to California, where he began working for Douglas Aircraft Company. It was here that he met Micaela, the love of his life. Together, they built a home filled with faith, love, and six children: Thelma, Vincent, David, Robert Jr., Victor, and Albert. For 63 years, Bobby and Micaela shared a partnership rooted in mutual respect and unwavering devotion. Bobby’s life was defined by his commitment to family. He sent money home to support his mother and siblings, and when his sister’s family faced hardship, he ensured their security by transferring ownership of one of his homes to them. His generosity knew no bounds. Raised as a devoted Catholic, Bobby's spiritual journey took a turn after he began studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses. After years of contemplation, he dedicated his life to Jehovah in the early 1970s, becoming known to many as Brother Duran. His faith became a central pillar of his life. Brother Duran was known for his quiet strength and unwavering work ethic. Over 54 years with the same freight company, he missed work only thrice, testament to his dedication. His colleagues often marveled at his resolve, and he would modestly attribute it to the responsibility of providing for his family. In retirement, Bobby found new purpose in advocacy. He quietly championed those who felt overlooked or voiceless, offering help and counsel without seeking recognition. He believed in the inherent dignity of every person and dedicated himself to making a difference. Bobby cherished life’s simple pleasures: reading, collecting soaps, nurturing plants, and enjoying music. His greatest joy, however, was his family. He took immense pride in his grandchildren—Elida, Daniel, Angel, Victoria, and Albert—lovingly engaging with their schoolwork and creative endeavors. Roberto "Bobby" Duran’s life was a shining example of humility, integrity, and love. His legacy is not only in the achievements or possessions he left behind but in the values he imparted to his children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His good name and the principles he lived by are the enduring gifts he bestowed upon his family and community.
