Robert Roy Harris
October 11, 1939 — July 3, 2026
It is with deep respect and heartfelt gratitude that we celebrate the life of Robert Roy Harris, affectionately known as Uncle Roy, who peacefully departed this world on July 3, 2026, at the age of 86, in the comfort of his home. Born on October 11, 1939, in Macon, Georgia, Robert was the cherished son of Walter Harris and Nina Lee Flynt Shurney Harris.
Robert was a man of profound knowledge and unwavering dedication, having graduated from Ballard Hudson High School in Macon, Georgia, and later from Morris Brown College, where he honed his skills as a Media Specialist. His commitment to education was further exemplified through his service in the US Army, and later in his career as a Media Specialist in various schools in the Atlanta area, culminating in his tenure at Therrell High School.
A devoted member of the church community, Robert's spiritual journey began at Greens Tabernacle Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia. As life unfolded, he found a spiritual home at Beulah Baptist Church under the guidance of Pastor John Cottrell, where he was an active and cherished member of the Sunday School class.
Robert's passion for learning was boundless. He was an avid member of the Audubon Society, and his travels to Africa in the 1960s were marked by his enthusiasm for sharing the wonders he encountered through photography and slides. His love for books and education was a gift he generously shared with his family, often bringing books to family gatherings, birthdays, and holidays, thereby nurturing a deep appreciation for knowledge among his loved ones.
Family was the cornerstone of Robert's life. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Roosevelt, William Henry, George, Walter, Solomon, Richard, and Carlton, and his sisters Cleo, Annie Lee, Jeannette, Elizabeth, and Luetta. He also cherished the memory of his aunts Henrietta Flynt Nottingham, Lucinda Flynt Henderson, Frances Harris Flynt Hollingsworth, Teresa Harris Kemp, and uncles John Flynt and Albany Harris.
Robert is survived by his beloved matriarch of the Harris family, his niece Helen Griggs Blackshear, as well as his dear nieces Willie Mae Wise, Barbara Ann Harris, Stacey Johnson Monroe, Karen Mills, Kalaya Summerah, and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. His life was also enriched by the enduring friendships with Rocky and Harold Baldwin.
The family extends their sincerest gratitude to Mrs. Kalaya Sumareh and her children, Anu Mullins, Jordan, Omar, Malik, Amiyah, and Amir Sumareh, for their loving care during Robert's transition at home. They also wish to thank the compassionate staff at Gentiva Hospice and express their appreciation to Rocky for his unwavering friendship.
A service celebrating Robert's life will be held on July 24, 2026, at 11:30 AM at Beulah Baptist Church, located at 170 Griffin St NW, Atlanta, GA 30314. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Robert.
