In Loving Memory

Robert O Hoerner (pap)
June 26, 1924 — August 1, 2020
It is with profound sadness and love that we announce the passing of Robert O. Hoerner, affectionately known as "Pap," who departed this world peacefully in his sleep on August 1, 2020, at the age of 96. Born on June 26, 1924, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Robert was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who enriched the lives of all who knew him with his warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication.
Robert was the cherished son of the late Edward M. and Miriam J. Hoerner. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Nagle Hoerner, with whom he shared 18 years of laughter and love until her passing in 1967. His siblings, Charles "Chick" Hoerner, Edward Jr. Hoerner, and Verna "Dolly" Hoerner, also predeceased him, leaving behind a legacy of familial bonds that Robert continued to nurture throughout his life.
A proud patriot, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the young age of 17, where he served valiantly as a combat engineer during World War II. His service was marked by bravery and resilience, and though an injury in Africa ended his naval career, it did not diminish his spirit or his love for his country. Upon returning home, Robert found employment at Bethlehem Steel Mill in Steelton, Pennsylvania, where his industrious nature and dedication shone brightly.
It was during this time that Robert met and fell in love with Elizabeth Nagle. Together, they built a life filled with joy and shared dreams, marked by mutual respect and adoration. Their time together was a testament to the enduring power of love, and Robert cherished every moment of the 18 years they had together.
Robert's legacy is carried on by his surviving children: his eldest daughter, Wanda Green; his son, Robert Nagle Hoerner and his wife Diane; and his daughter, Jennette Hoerner Wooten and her husband Rich. He was the proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and was blessed with 18 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.
In his later years, after the passing of his parents, Robert moved to Caballo, New Mexico, to live with his daughter Wanda. There he embraced the tranquility of his surroundings and cherished the time spent with family. Despite the distance from his birthplace, his heart remained close to Harrisburg, where he followed Michigan college football with fervor and never missed a game of his beloved Philadelphia Eagles.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Robert’s remarkable life will be held on September 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Churchville Oberlin Cemetery, located at 51 S Harrisburg St, Swatara, PA 17111. The family invites all who knew Robert to join them in paying tribute and sharing stories at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, they request that attendees bring a funny or warm story to share, as Robert was always one to appreciate a good laugh and heartfelt remembrance.
Robert O. Hoerner's life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit, the importance of family, and the joy of simple pleasures. He will be forever remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the love he shared with so many. As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man deeply loved. Rest in peace, dear Pap, knowing you have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate to know you.
