Robert McDaniel

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert McDaniel, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who left this world on July 11, 2026, after a courageous battle with bone marrow cancer. Born on September 17, 1959, in Camden, Alabama, Robert was the beloved son of Joe McDaniel and Martha Rich McDaniel. Robert's life was a testament to strength, love, and unwavering dedication. He grew up surrounded by the warmth of his family and the values they instilled in him. After graduating from Wilcox County High School, Robert's talents shone brightly as he excelled in football, earning a scholarship to Auburn University. Despite the promising future in athletics, Robert chose to enlist in the United States Army in August 1978, answering a higher calling to serve his country. For nearly two decades, Robert served with honor, retiring as a Sergeant First Class (E-7) in September 1998. As a 13B Cannon Crewmember in the Field Artillery, he was recognized as a disciplined soldier, respected leader, and trusted mentor. His service was marked by numerous military honors and decorations, and he completed extensive leadership and technical training courses, including the Primary, Basic, and Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Courses, Field Artillery Maintenance training, and the Fundamentals of Radiation Safety Course, among others. After retiring from the military, Robert settled in Harvest, Alabama, where he continued to exemplify his hardworking and dependable nature. He was known for his quiet strength, generous heart, and wisdom. Robert believed in giving his best in everything he did, whether it was through his career or his passions outside of work. Robert found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, cooking, playing the guitar, listening to music, and gardening. These activities were not just hobbies, but ways to bring his family and friends together, creating cherished memories. His love for his family was evident in every meal he prepared, every note he played, and every plant he nurtured. Robert's faith was a guiding light in his life. He accepted Christ at an early age and began his spiritual journey with New Hope Missionary Baptist Church #2. Over the years, he continued his walk of faith with St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church and later, Second Chance Ministries. His spirituality was a cornerstone of his character, strengthening him and those around him. Robert was preceded in death by Charles Mosley, Deloise G. Price, and Mary Roscoe. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Shirley Louise McDaniel, whom he married on January 6, 1984, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and devotion. Robert is also survived by his children: Jillian Shontel McDaniel, Shilaad McDaniel, Karen Pledger Curd, Lamont Williams, Olivia McDaniel, Alexandria McDaniel, and Braden McDaniel; his grandchildren and great-grandchild; his siblings Pastor Alonzo (Fredericka) McDaniel, Terry (Angela) McDaniel, Russell (Angela) McDaniel; his goddaughter Mar’jourie; and a large extended family including nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many dear friends. In honor of Robert's memory, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice or an organization supporting cancer research. Robert's legacy is a tapestry woven with threads of love, resilience, and faith. He touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. As we gather to celebrate his life, we remember a man who lived with purpose, laughed with joy, and loved with all his heart. His spirit will continue to inspire us, and his memory will forever be cherished.
