August 23, 1962 — May 23, 2026

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Robert Maurice Smith, a cherished father, brother, grandfather, and friend. Robert left us on May 23, 2026, at the age of 63, after bravely battling cardiac arrest and a stroke. Born on August 23, 1962, in Decatur, Alabama, Robert lived a life full of generosity, resilience, and unwavering love for his family and community. Robert was the beloved son of the late Robert Smith Sr. and Patricia Smith, and the treasured grandson of Jessie and Regina Smith, who predeceased him. He is survived by his loving siblings: his oldest brother Reggie Smith, his older sister Denice Smith, and his younger brother Tomas Smith. Robert leaves behind his cherished children, Michael Smith, Krystle Smith, Tonie Smith, and Rhaunice Smith, along with 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life. He also leaves behind 4 nieces and 6 nephews who remember him fondly. Robert was a proud graduate of Austin High School, class of 1981. He pursued higher education at East Central Community College in 1983, where he studied Business Administration and Social Work. His career was marked by dedication and passion, running a successful trucking company for 23 years. Robert's entrepreneurial spirit also led him to co-found the Los Angeles Opportunities Industrialization Center (L.A.O.I.C) in 1995 with Chris Floyd, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young adults transitioning to independent living. A lifelong member of the First Baptist Church Decatur, Robert's faith was a guiding light throughout his life. He served as a Youth Pastor for four years, imparting wisdom and guidance to teenagers facing life's challenges. Robert was a beacon of positivity, always ready to uplift others with his infectious smile and kind words. Robert's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He found joy in playing the guitar and traveling, often sharing stories of his adventures and successes with those around him. His personal qualities—respect, empathy, and the unique ability to transform someone's day—were known to all who met him. A private funeral service will be held to honor Robert's memory. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Desert Valley Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care during Robert’s final days. To those who knew him, Robert Maurice Smith was a steadfast pillar of strength and warmth. While his physical presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. In Robert's memory, let us strive to live with the same kindness and love that he so effortlessly shared with the world. For those wishing to send their condolences, the family asks that you remember Robert through acts of kindness and by supporting organizations that align with his values of community support and empowerment. May he rest in eternal peace, watching over us as we stand tall through life's trials, just as he taught us.
