With heavy hearts yet profound gratitude for a long life, we announce the passing of Robert James Gates on February 12, 2023. Born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania on September 2, 1933, Bob, as he was known, was a beacon of dedication and resilience throughout his 89 years. He departed this world after a battle with Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's, with his beloved wife, Joyce, by his side, offering comfort in his final moments. Bob was the son of Mary Hans and stepson to Raymond Hans, who instilled in him the values of hard work and family dedication. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Raymond Hans, and his brothers, Bill and Harry. Survived by his brother, Tom Hans, sister, Virginia Roncevich, children, and grandchildren, Bob's life continues to live on within his family. In November 1959, Bob married, Thelma Joyce Gates. Together, they built a life filled with love and memories in abundance. Bob was the father of three children: Michael Gates, Nancy Zismann, and Carol Lippert. His legacy further extends to six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to his life. Bob's career was a testament to his tireless work ethic. He devoted many years to Eastern Airlines, and when not there, he could be found working construction. After retiring from the airline, Bob continued to keep busy by driving shuttles for Charlie Brown Park and Ride. His hands were never idle, as Bob found joy in camping, hunting, and collecting antique guns. Yet, it was his woodworking that truly showcased his talent and creativity. With each project, Bob crafted family keepsakes and added beautiful additions to the family home, his handiwork serving as a lasting reminder of his love and skill. Bob's devotion to family was unwavering. He worked tirelessly so that Joyce could stay home with their children, nurturing a warm and loving family environment. He also had a special fondness for bluegrass music, particularly the tunes played by his brother Harry, which always brought a smile to his face. As we bid farewell to Bob, we celebrate the life he led—a life filled with love, dedication, and an enduring commitment to those he held dear. Robert James Gates will be missed but never forgotten. As he rests in peace, we carry forward his legacy; forever grateful for the time we shared.
