It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Robert H. Nielsen, affectionately known as Bob, who departed this world on May 21, 2026, at the age of 67. Born on December 27, 1958, in Pierre,South Dakota. Bob brought light to the lives of all who knew him with his quick wit, warm smile, and a heart full of kindness.
The cherished son of Clinton and Mary Ann Nielsen, who have both predeceased him, Bob grew up surrounded by the love of his family, forging bonds that would carry him through life. After graduating from T.F. Riggs High School in 1977, Bob answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany. His service to the nation was marked by dedication and a steadfast spirit.
Bob’s professional journey was as varied and vibrant as his personality. He began his career as a ranch hand, found success as a car salesman, and eventually became a used car manager in Pierre, where his reputation for integrity and fairness was well known. Driven by a desire to help others, Bob pursued training as a surgical technician, a role he cherished until his retirement.
In Pierre, South Dakota, he found his lifelong love, Barbara Hershley, whom he married, building a home filled with laughter, joy, and companionship. Together, Bob and Barbara raised two wonderful children, Daniel and Lacy, who were the pride and joy of his life. His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren, Jaelynn and Ellie, who were his delight and constant source of stories and smiles.
Bob was a man of many passions. A lifelong Chicago Bears fan, he could often be found cheering enthusiastically for his team. An avid hunter and fisherman, he relished the serenity of the great outdoors. Whether riding his Harley along winding roads or enjoying a game of golf, he embraced life with enthusiasm and a zest for adventure.
He was a member of several community organizations, leaving a mark of generosity and dedication. His ability to make friends wherever he went was a testament to his genuine nature and his gift for making others feel welcome, valued, and seen.
Bob is survived by his loving wife Barbara; his son Daniel; his daughter Lacy and her husband Brian; his granddaughters, Jaelynn and Ellie; his sister Christie Zander and her husband Paul; his brothers, Mark Nielsen and his wife Sheryl, and James Nielsen and his wife Sharon. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will carry forward his memory and spirit.
A service to celebrate Bob's remarkable life will be held at the Lutheran Memorial Church, located in Pierre, South Dakota, where family and friends will gather to honor a life well-lived and a man deeply loved.
Bob Nielsen will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, his ability to light up a room, and the love he shared with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
