Robert Donavon Orchard
May 23, 1939 — December 26, 2025
It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Robert Donavon(Don) Orchard, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Robert suddenly departed this world on December 26, 2025, surrounded by the warmth of his home and family. He was 86 years old.
Born on May 23, 1939, in Swan River, Manitoba, Don was the cherished 2nd son of John Donavon and Grace Robena. He grew up with an inherent love for life, a characteristic that would define his journey and inspire those around him.
Don was a man
with a passion for education. After graduating from Swan River High School, he pursued his calling at Teachers College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and later earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta. His career in teaching spanned an impressive 43 years, during which he touched countless lives Even after retirement, Don continued to serve his community by volunteering in ESL programs, demonstrating his lifelong dedication to helping others grow and succeed.
In 1966, Don married Deardra (Deb), and together they built a life filled with love of adventure, and family. Their marriage of nearly 60 years stood as a testament to their enduring bond and mutual respect. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Christopher Orchard Carla Seyts (Gary), and Shawna Dawn Prete (Matt). Don's legacy of love and family extends to his cherished grandchildren—Daniel, Casey, Julia, Riley, Izabella, Ava, and Roman and —who will forever hold dear the memories of family camping trips and joyful visits to the dollar store with their beloved Papa. Don is also remembered fondly by his brother Jack (Stephanie) and sister Lynda Froome (Lloyd). and his nieces and nephews.
A man of boundless energy and diverse interests, Don balanced his teaching career with operating a part-time steam cleaning business, showcasing his strong work ethic and dedication to providing for his family. His love for sports was evident, not only in his years of playing baseball, football, and curling but also in his coaching and avid fandom.
He was a valued member of the Elks Club, belonged to various choirs
including his recent involvement with the Sunshine Boys at his condo home in Red Deer.
Don attended the United Church in his early years and later he explored and joined the Bahai Faith.
Don loved life. He was known for his friendly greetings on daily walks, his generous spirit, and his unyielding commitment to making a positive impact on everyone he met. He was a man who loved life, loved his family, and found happiness in the simple pleasures that each day offered.
A private funeral service will be held at Heritage Village, 5300 48 Street, Red Deer, AB, as we gather to celebrate a life well-lived . As we say goodbye to Don, we hold his memory close, remembering a life of purpose, love, and unyielding kindness. May he rest in peace, knowing that his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.
