Robert Dabney Davis
April 13, 1939 — February 2, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we commemorate the remarkable life of Robert Dabney Davis, fondly known to his loved ones as Bob. He departed this world peacefully on February 2, 2026, after a short illness, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and learning. Born on April 13, 1939, in the charming town of Kershaw, South Carolina, Bob was the cherished son of Charles E. Davis, Jr. and Geneva (Annie) Dabney Davis.
Bob's journey through life was a testament to his intellect, passion for teaching, and unwavering dedication to those he held dear. He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1957, and his insatiable thirst for knowledge led him to North Carolina State University, where he earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees in applied mathematics by 1962. During his time at university, he worked summers at a Colorado resort and an Alaskan fish cannery, experiences that enriched his life and broadened his horizons.
Bob's academic pursuits culminated in a PhD in applied mathematics from Florida State University in 1969, under the guidance of his esteemed advisor, Nickolas Heerema. It was here that he developed lifelong friendships, including one with the late Ed Wishart, who would later play a pivotal role in guiding Bob toward a distinguished teaching career at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).
For 31 years, Bob dedicated his life to education, inspiring countless students with his exceptional teaching in the history of mathematics, abstract algebra, linear algebra, and calculus. He was a founding member of the "stammtisch," a beloved group of retired UNR faculty members who continue to meet weekly, a testament to the strong bonds he forged throughout his career.
In 1995, Bob's life was beautifully enriched when he married Leslie-Lynn Grant on May 18, beginning a 21-year journey filled with love and laughter. Together, they shared a home filled with warmth and happiness, and Bob embraced his role as a devoted stepfather to Matthew Enright.
Bob was a man of many talents and interests. Known for his quick wit, warm smile, and charming Southern drawl, he had an unparalleled ability to light up any room with his humor and contagious laughter. A well-read man, Bob's vast knowledge made him the definitive voice in almost any discussion, and his friends and family cherished his thoughtful insights.
Though Bob retired in 2000, his love for life and learning never waned. He was known for his affection for his Porsche convertible, in which he delighted in giving rides to friends, sharing not just the thrill of the drive, but also the joy of his company.
Bob's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, but his spirit will forever be a beacon of inspiration. He is survived by his beloved wife, Leslie-Lynn Grant, and his cherished stepson, Matthew Enright. As we celebrate Bob's rich and full life, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue to touch all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Bob’s memory to a charity of your choice, as he believed deeply in the power of giving and the importance of community.
Bob Dabney Davis will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
