Celebrating the Life of Robert Chavis
Robert Chavis, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on October 13, 2026. Born on July 9, 1940, in Columbia, South Carolina, Robert was the beloved son of Fannie and Wesley Chavis. He was the last of their children, having been predeceased by his 13 siblings, and now joins them in eternal rest.
Robert's life was a testament to service and dedication. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for 12 years, earning multiple recognitions for his exemplary service and commitment. His military discipline and honor were qualities that he carried into his civilian life.
After his military service, Robert continued to serve his community by joining the New York Police Department's Housing Authority. Over the years, through hard work and integrity, he rose to the rank of Sergeant, a position from which he retired with great respect and admiration from his colleagues and community. His career was marked by his unwavering commitment to justice, safety, and the well-being of the residents he served.
Beyond his professional achievements, Robert was a devoted family man. He is survived by his three children, Robin Chavis, Byron Chavis, and Steven Chavis, who carry forward his legacy of kindness, strength, and resilience. Robert was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and a beloved great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren and 4 bonus grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and pride into his life.
Robert's life was filled with love, laughter, and compassion. He was a pillar of strength for his family and a source of wisdom and guidance. His gentle spirit, warm smile, and generous heart will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we say goodbye to Robert Chavis, we celebrate a life well-lived, a man deeply loved, and a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love and memories of those he cherished.
