Robert "Bob" Henry Schwartz

In loving memory of Robert "Bob" Henry Schwartz, a remarkable man whose life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and service. Born on April 20, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, Bob left this world on August 29, 2026, surrounded by the family he cherished so dearly. Bob was the beloved son of Emanuel Schwartz and Rose Mantel Schwartz and was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Carole Schwartz. He is survived by his adored wife of 68 years, Carol, with whom he shared an extraordinary journey filled with love and partnership. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters, Rhonda Schwartz (Steven Slovic) and Lisa Weiss (Sam), who brought immense joy and pride into Bob’s life. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Talia Weiss Rein (Rob), Jacob Weiss, Spencer Slovic, Cameron Slovic, and Jia-Qi Slovic, and his great-grandchildren, Wesley and Caleb Rein. Bob’s academic journey began at Midwood High School in Brooklyn, New York, where he graduated in 1953. He went on to attend Dartmouth College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and cum laude in 1957. His pursuit of knowledge led him to the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he earned his M.D. with Honor in 1962. His commitment to service was exemplified during his time in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, where he served as a Clinical Associate with the National Institutes of Health from 1964 to 1966. Bob dedicated his professional life to pediatric care, particularly for children with chronic allergic and respiratory illnesses. As a revered educator, Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester, he taught generations of medical students and young doctors, instilling in them the arts of the physical exam, diagnosis, and treatment decision-making. In 1985, Bob co-founded the Allergy Asthma Immunology of Rochester, a practice that became a beacon of hope for many. Even after retiring and moving to Portland, Oregon, in 2008 to be closer to his family, Bob continued to share his expertise through volunteer work and teaching at Oregon Health and Science University. Bob’s life was rich with interests and passions. He cherished his time spent with family in Cannon Beach, Oregon, and found joy in the warmth of the sun. Known for his big presence and cunning wit, Bob's humor and intelligence left a lasting impression on all who knew him. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Bob's caregivers, especially Shulamit, Nell, and Ally, who provided exceptional care and comfort. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Bethesda, MD, a cause that was close to his heart. Bob's legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the enduring love of his family.
