October 29, 1939 — June 30, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert B. Ray III, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this world peacefully at home on June 30, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Born on October 29, 1939, in the tranquil town of Shelby, Nebraska, Bob, as he was fondly known, lived a life marked by love, adventure, and unwavering service to others. Bob was the cherished son of the late Robert B. Ray II and Cynthia Elizabeth "Liz" Ray. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Robert B. Ray IV, whose memory he carried in his heart throughout his life. Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Edna, who stood by his side through every joy and challenge; his loving daughter, Alina Dougherty; his son, Edward Ray; and his precious grandchildren, Conor, McKenzie, and Hannah Dougherty, and Robert J. Ray, who brought him immeasurable pride and happiness. An alumnus of Hastings High School and the University of Nebraska, Bob's education laid the foundation for a distinguished career. He dedicated his professional life to public service, working for Cargo, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and various NGOs, before eventually serving with the Department of Agriculture. His work was a testament to his commitment to making the world a better place, a legacy that will endure in the hearts of those who knew him. Bob's life was a tapestry of rich experiences and boundless curiosity. A passionate traveler and adventurer, he explored the majestic landscapes of Grand Teton and Denali National Parks and had the unique opportunity to be in Alaska and Hawaii when they became states. His spirit of service extended beyond borders as he served in the Peace Corps in Guinea, touching lives with his kindness and generosity. In retirement, he and Edna embarked on journeys to over 70 countries, enriching their lives with diverse cultures and profound memories. A dedicated Boy Scout leader and a proud Rotarian, Bob believed in the power of community and the importance of giving back. His leadership and mentorship inspired many young minds, fostering a spirit of compassion and perseverance that will resonate for generations. In remembrance of Bob's generous spirit, the family welcomes donations to Habitat for Humanity on Kauai or The Rotary Club of Hampton Roads. These organizations reflect his lifelong commitment to service and his desire to leave the world better than he found it. As we celebrate the life of Robert B. Ray III, we honor a man whose love, wisdom, and adventurous spirit touched all who knew him. His legacy of kindness and dedication to others will forever be cherished and remembered with love and gratitude.
