In Loving Memory of Lt. Col. Robert Van Rite
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the sudden passing of Robert Van Rite, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Born on April 13, 1952, in Chicago, IL, Robert was the beloved son of Robert and Frieda Van Rite. He leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and warmth that touched the lives of everyone around him.
Robert's journey through life was marked by his commitment to family and country. After completing his education at St. Luke's High School in San Antonio, TX, Robert pursued higher education at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. There, he graduated as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force in 1974, beginning a distinguished military career that spanned three decades. Serving at various Air Force bases, including F.E. Warren AFB, Hanscomb AFB, and Andrews AFB, Robert rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 2004.
In 1980, fate brought Robert together with Amy Diehl, introduced by her uncle, who was Robert's squadron commander. A year later, they married on October 17, 1981, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love and mutual respect. Together, they raised four wonderful children: Victoria, Eric, Jennifer, and Stephen, and welcomed the joy of seven grandchildren: Michael, Elijah, Matthew, Emma, Tamsyn, Darcy, and Lillian.
Following his military career, Robert continued to serve his country as an analyst for the Department of Justice, where he worked diligently until his retirement in 2020. His devotion to his faith was also evident through his active participation in Sacred Heart Church in Bowie, MD, where he served as a lector and contributed to numerous parish activities.
Robert's commitment to community service was exemplified by his long-standing involvement with the Knights of Columbus. His leadership roles included serving as Grand Knight for Sacred Heart Council 2577 and as Faithful Captain and Faithful Navigator for the St. John Neuman Assembly 1763. His dedication to the Knights and his contributions to the Archdiocese of the Washington District of the 4th degree were immense, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Known for his quick wit and warm smile, Robert was always ready with a joke to lighten the mood. His kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on everyone he met, making them feel welcomed and valued. Beyond his professional and community commitments, Robert found joy in bowling and golf, particularly enjoying his time on the Elks League and the Knights of Columbus League.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Amy, his cherished children and grandchildren, and his loving siblings, Janice and David. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Frieda Van Rite.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held on November 16, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Robert's memory to the Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council 2577, Bowie MD 20715
