May 30, 1955 — April 19, 2026
It is with deep sadness and profound love that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Rita Kennedy, on April 19, 2026, at the age of 70. Rita left this world gently, embraced by the warmth and love of her family, in the same way she lived her life—with grace, dignity, and a soothing presence that touched all who knew her.
Rita was born on May 30, 1955, in Gary, Indiana, to her cherished parents, James Heard and Barbara Jean Fields. From a young age, Rita exuded a spirited determination and an infectious joy that would define her life and endear her to everyone she encountered. She was predeceased by her loving grandparents, Alvin and Josie Fields, her father, James Heard, her mother, Barbara Jean Fields, and her dear sister, Veronica Lynn Brannon, who now welcome her into their eternal embrace.
Rita's life was marked by her unwavering devotion to her family and her community. She is survived by her devoted husband of 19 years, Eddy Kennedy, who stood by her side with unwavering love and support. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, mutual respect, and shared dreams. Rita's legacy continues through her children, Tirel and Hazel Mayo, and Yovonna Kennedy and Tanisha Neely, who carry forward her values and love.
A proud grandmother, Rita cherished her grandchildren—Shawnice Williams, Yadaya Jones, Micah Mayo, and Le’Kieth Kennedy—each a testament to her nurturing spirit and enduring love. Her heart swelled with pride and joy as she watched her family grow, welcoming eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren into her fold, each one holding a special place in her heart.
Rita's professional journey was one of dedication and resilience. She worked as a steelworker for many years, a testament to her strength and perseverance. Later, she transitioned into debt settlement, where her compassion and understanding helped countless individuals find their way to financial stability. She retired with a sense of fulfillment, having made a lasting impact on many lives.
Beyond her career, Rita was an active and beloved member of the Maranatha SDA Church, where her faith and generosity of spirit were guiding lights. Her hobbies brought her immense joy; she was an avid reader with a love for storytelling that she shared with her family. Her collection of elephant statues was a testament to her appreciation for beauty and symbolism, while her love for singing filled her home with warmth and harmony.
As we remember Rita Kennedy, we celebrate a life well-lived, enriched by love, laughter, and the joy of family. Her legacy is one of kindness, strength, and an unwavering love that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at Maranatha SDA Church, where family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate Rita's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Rita's name to a charity of your choice, reflecting her generous spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others.
Rita Kennedy's light will forever shine in the hearts of those she touched, a beacon of love, compassion, and grace. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten, as her spirit lives on in each of us who were blessed to know her.
