July 18, 1962 — October 22, 2026

With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Ricky Dean McDowell, a cherished husband, brother, uncle, and friend, who left this world peacefully on October 22, 2026. Ricky's departure has left an irreplaceable void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. He spent his final days at Union Post Acute & Assisted Living Facility in Union, South Carolina, where he was surrounded by love and care. Born on July 18, 1962, in Tryon, North Carolina, Ricky was the beloved son of the late Daner McDowell and Retter McDowell. He was a native of Spartanburg County and a proud alumnus of Landrum High School, where he excelled as a SUPERSTAR basketball player. His talent on the court was matched only by his passion and determination. Ricky's true legacy, however, was the unconditional love and encouragement he extended to every child he encountered. His signature phrase, "Big Lips!" brought smiles to many faces and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Ricky is survived by his devoted wife, Monica McDowell, who stood by his side through all of life's seasons. He also leaves behind his cherished stepchildren and step-grandchildren, Cinyrah, Cerenity, and Cayla Smith, whose lives he touched profoundly. Ricky's loving family also includes his brothers, Dana McDowell (Almeta) and Larry McDowell (Harriet), both residing in Spartanburg, SC; his sisters, Gerlene Suber (James) of Ooltewah, TN, Rev. Laura Miller (Johnny) of Tryon, NC, Rev. Kathy Simpson (Rev. Larry) of Boiling Springs, SC, and Lisa McDowell of Landrum, SC. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Ricky was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters, who have now welcomed him home. A celebration of Ricky's life will be held on October 25, 2026, at 2:00 PM at The John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel, located at 594 Howard Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Ricky are invited to join in remembering the remarkable life he led. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in honor of Ricky's generous spirit and his commitment to helping others. The McDowell family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support, love, and kindness shown during this difficult time. Your comforting words, thoughtful gestures, and presence have brought immense strength and solace to our hearts. Special thanks are extended to J.W. We are especially grateful to those who traveled, prepared meals, sent flowers, or extended helping hands in so many meaningful ways.
