Rick Smith

October 30, 1950 — May 1, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rick Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Rick peacefully left this world on May 1, 2026, at his home in Visalia, surrounded by the love of his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 75 years old. Born on October 30, 1950, in Exeter, Rick was the cherished son of Maxine and Blackie Smith. A proud graduate of Exeter High School's class of 1967, Rick pursued higher education at the College of the Sequoias before completing his bachelor's degree at Pacific Union College in Angwin in 1972. On June 29, 1974, Rick married the love of his life, Sandra "Sandy" Smith. Together, they built a fulfilling and adventurous life, raising two wonderful sons, Matt and Josh. Rick's dedication to his family was unwavering, and his love for Sandy was evident in every step of their 51-year marriage. Rick dedicated four decades of his life to the City of Visalia, where he served with distinction as Superintendent. His professional life was marked by dedication and excellence, traits he carried into his personal life as well. An avid baseball enthusiast, Rick's passion for the sport was infectious. He played whenever he could and spent countless hours coaching, guiding young athletes from Little League through Babe Ruth, and up to high school. He took particular pride in coaching freshman baseball at Golden West High School in Visalia. Rick's love for sports extended to his own family, as he joyously watched his sons and, later, his grandchildren excel in their own athletic endeavors. Rick's interests were as varied as they were vibrant. He had a keen eye for photography, capturing life's moments with the same love and care he showed in every aspect of his life. His adventurous spirit led him to travel widely, always with his camera in hand. Golfing and dog agility were among his favorite pastimes, pursuits he enjoyed partially for the joy they brought him and partially for the opportunities they provided to share time with loved ones. A man of faith, Rick was an active member of Grace Community in Visalia and Grace Bible Church in Arroyo Grande. His kindness to others and the warmth of his ever-present smile left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Rick was a fun-loving father and grandfather, sharing his love for sports and photography with his six grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. Rick is survived by his devoted wife, Sandy; his sons, Matt and Josh; his sister, Sharon Upton; and his brother, Dennis McIntosh. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication that will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him. A service to honor and celebrate Rick's life will be held in Visalia, where family and friends will gather to remember the remarkable man who touched so many lives with his generosity, humor, and steadfast love. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a cancer research organization of your choice, honoring Rick's valiant fight and his hope for a cure. Rick Smith's life was a testament to love, family, and community. He leaves behind a world made better by his presence, and though he is no longer with us, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide those he loved.
