It is with profound sadness and gentle reflection that we announce the passing of Richard William Whitmore, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world peacefully at his residence on May 22, 2026, at the age of 95. Born on December 15, 1930, in St. Louis, Missouri, Richard's journey through life was marked by unwavering dedication, compassion, and love. Richard was the beloved son of the late John Stewart and Esther Yaeger Whitmore. He was predeceased by his brother, Stewart Whitmore, and his son, David Whitmore, whose memories he held close to his heart. Richard's legacy lives on through his devoted wife of 40 years, Patricia, his daughter, Julie Whitmore, his son, Matthew Whitmore, and his cherished grandchildren, Emily Laith Sersain and Andrew Sersain, who brought him immense joy and pride. Richard's early years were spent in the vibrant community of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School. A bright and inquisitive mind led him to the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he earned his bachelor's degree. His thirst for knowledge further propelled him to the University of Michigan, where he achieved a Master's degree, a testament to his dedication to learning and personal growth. In his early twenties, Richard bravely served his country as a Lieutenant in the US Army during the Korean War. His time in the military was marked by courage and a deep sense of duty, values that he carried with him throughout his life. Following his service, Richard embarked on a remarkable 30-year career at a US Steel Lab, where his work was characterized by innovation and integrity. After retiring, his passion for education led him to the University of Pittsburgh, where he continued to inspire and mentor future generations. Richard and Patricia found solace and community when they moved to Hilton Head Island in 1998. There, they embraced the warmth of the coastal climate and the camaraderie of dear friends. Richard's compassionate spirit shone brightly through his 15 years of volunteering with Second Helpings, where he dedicated himself to nurturing and uplifting those in need. In remembering Richard, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. He was a beacon of kindness and resilience, touching the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy is one of generosity, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to family and community. As we honor Richard's memory, let us carry forward the values he held dear and the love he so freely shared. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts. A private service will be held for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Second Helpings, an organization dear to Richard's heart, in his memory.
