It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Richard Wesley Cram on May 3, 2026, at the age of 79. Surrounded by the love and warmth of his family, Richard departed this world with grace and dignity, leaving behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
Born on June 27, 1946, in Beverly, Massachusetts, Richard was the cherished son of Gordon and Dorothy Cram. He was preceded in death by his devoted parents and his beloved wife, Suzann Marie Cram, with whom he shared 59 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, beginning with their marriage on July 23, 1966, in Salem, Massachusetts.
Richard was a proud graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1964, and went on to earn his associate degree in science from North Shore Community College in 1977. His early years were marked by his dedication to his country, serving honorably in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1968, where he achieved the rank of Aviation Mechanist’s Mate 2nd Class before transferring to the Naval Reserve.
In 1970, Richard embarked on a distinguished career with the Beverly Fire Department, dedicating 29 years to serving and protecting his community. Rising through the ranks to become a Captain, he was known for his steadfast leadership and the deep respect he held for his fellow firemen. Richard was a man who led by example, always ensuring the safety of his team and never asking them to do something he wouldn’t do himself.
Beyond his professional achievements, Richard had a zest for life that was evident in his passion for motorcycles and his love of travel. This past year was particularly special, as he had the opportunity to create cherished memories traveling with his beloved daughter and son in law, Carey and Jerry.
Richard is survived by his cherished children, Rita Sweeney and her husband Howard, Carey Smith and her husband Jerry, and Dawn Kilroy and her husband Douglas. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren: Alexis Diaz, Camden Smith, Veronica Ammon, Megan Sweeney, and Miranda Byrge. His legacy continues with six great-grandchildren who will grow up hearing stories of his kindness and courage.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Amanda Stevenson, whose compassionate care provided comfort to both Richard and Suzann in their later years. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, an organization near to Richard's heart.
Richard Wesley Cram will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to family and friends, his selfless service to his community, and the warmth and kindness he spread wherever he went. His life was a testament to the power of love, dedication, and compassion, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we say goodbye, we hold on to the cherished memories and the enduring spirit of a remarkable man who touched the lives of so many.
